Akash Malik Runner-Up in APT Taipei PC 2024 Hyper Turbo – High Roller


APT Taipei PC 2024 is bringing in the Indian names and how! Hot on the heels of Abhinav Iyer’s snagging runner-up status at the High Roller Double Stack, Akash Malik snagged the coveted runner-up position at Event #51: Hyper Turbo – High Roller. Malik, like Iyer, missed shipping the event by a whisker but still took home TWD 332,000. (~₹870501). The win proves Malik can be resilient enough on the felts when needed. The total number of entries for this event was 61. Chien Tung Wu of Taiwan took the top spot, taking home a prize of TWD 462,120. Here are the top 9 finishers of the event.

Malik, originally from Delhi, is the latest name to join the already burgeoning list of Indians who have cashed out at the prestigious poker series. Earlier, Dhaval Mudgal and Saransh Garg took home TWD 17,000 and TWD 75,000, respectively, at the Mystery Bounty Hunter event and Tick Tock BOOM – Super Hold’em.

Akash Malik

For Malik, this is another addition to his already long list of poker tournament achievements. According to Hendonmob, his first recorded cash-out was when he shipped ₹10,000 No Limit Hold’em at the India Poker Championship, Goa, in 2010 and took home ₹1,50,000. Malik is an internationally recognised poker player and has constantly been in the money at events such as the Macau Poker Cup in 2014 and the Aussie Millions Poker Championship in 2015.

He even shipped the HK$4000 No Limit Hold’em Team Event at the Asia Pacific Poker Tour—APPT Macau Poker Cup in 2015, taking in HK$49,046. He has been a regular at WSOP events as well and has cashed out at the prestigious several times, beginning from 2013 to 2023. In 2023, he also saw money in the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em -Super Turbo (Bracelet Event), taking in $2001. 

The APT Taipei Poker Classic 2024, which began on 27th September and will have events until 7th October, It has 114 events hosted at two locations in Taipei: the Asia Poker Arena and the Chinese Mahjong League. The highlights are the TWD 50K buy-in Main Event, with a staggering TWD 65 Million GTD (~$2 Million) guaranteed prize pool. Other events that are bound to capture the poker community’s attention are the TWD 300,000 Super High Roller and the TWD 110,000 High Roller. 

The Indian contingent has been coming up trumps at APT, and it remains to be seen which other Indian will cash out or probably even ship one of the events.  It is a heartening aspect for the Indian poker community, as every win makes not just the winner but also the game famous in India.
