Abhinav Iyer progresses; Mortensen leads APL Vietnam ME 1C

The Pro Poker Club in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City has become a very popular destination for Asian poker players over the last few months. The top poker brands have hosted tournament series there and the latest series to begin there was Asia Poker League (APL) Vietnam, scheduled between 9-20 May 2019.

While plenty of side events have concluded, the VND 8 Billion GTD Main Event has four starting flights, the third of which ended last night. The first and second flight jointly contributed 134 entries while the third flight saw an astonishing response, generating a massive field of 200 entries, which was much more than the first two flights combined.

A total of 46 players managed to get a bag at the end of the required 14 levels of play on Day 1C, taking the total survivors list to 75 players. The first couple of days saw very modest fields and the Main Event will require another 200 entries on Day 1D today to hit the promised guaranteed amount in prize money.

USA seems to be having a good outing so far in HCM City as after Daniel Perkins took the lead on Day 1B, it was another USA player in Matthew Mortensen who emerged as chip leader on 1C. However, the difference is that Mortensen has finished the day with a monster stack of 400k which is much higher than anyone else in the competition so far.

The next best was Perkins who has 292k in chips, so Mortensen will have a pretty decent advantage when he resumes on Day 2. As for Team India, Abhinav Iyer was the sole survivor, moving forward with a stack of 83,500, which is slightly below the average stack. However, Iyer is a next-level talent and he can definitely chip up on Day 2. No one can forget his APT Vietnam ME title earlier this year.

Day 1C top chip counts:

  1. Matthew Mortensen – 400,000
  2. Yuwen Pan – 271,000
  3. Wayne Heung – 264,000
  4. Jul Tran – 262,000
  5. Chan Ying Kit Andy – 252,500
  6. Tran Xuan Truc – 237,000
  7. Vu Duc Trung – 212,000
  8. Nguyen Gia Trung – 197,500
  9. Dang Thanh Luong – 189,000
  10. Nguyen Tien Thanh – 184,500
