A23 Poker Professor: Strategies For Freeroll Tournaments

Welcome back to another class, students! In our last class, we delved into the insidious nature of tilt in poker and explored effective strategies to minimise its harmful effects. Today, we shift our focus to a seemingly relaxed yet surprisingly challenging aspect of the game: freeroll tournaments.

Freerolls, by their very nature, present a unique set of obstacles. The lack of financial risk and commitment often leads to a reckless, all-in-or-nothing approach from a significant portion of the field. This ‘free money’ mentality brings out an aggressive, unpredictable playing style, making it incredibly difficult to read opponents and implement a consistent strategy.

Freerolls in poker

Freeroll tournaments are poker events where players do not have to pay an entry fee to participate. They are typically sponsored by online poker rooms, websites, or other entities to attract new players or incentivise existing ones.

The risk-free nature of freerolls encourages a highly volatile style of play. Players are more likely to wager with their chips, go all-in with marginal hands, and engage in reckless bluffs. This aggressive environment makes it challenging to decipher opponents’ tendencies and accurately assess hand strength.

Furthermore, the lack of consistent playing patterns makes it difficult to establish a reliable read on opponents. Tells, such as betting patterns or physical cues, become less obvious as players are less concerned about making strategic decisions.

Can you earn from freerolls? A real-life example

While many see freerolls as just a starting point for beginners, there are dedicated poker players, some of them recreational, who exclusively play freeroll tournaments and make a steady income. For example, several online poker players in India have mastered freeroll grinding, consistently earning between ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 per month without ever depositing money into a poker site.

These players have developed disciplined strategies—choosing the most rewarding freerolls, playing patiently in the early stages, and targeting weaker players in the later stages. Over time, they accumulate enough winnings to either cash out or enter higher-stakes events, all from freeroll earnings alone.

This proves that freeroll tournaments aren’t just for newcomers learning poker. Nor does playing for free chips mean the game lacks importance. If players approach freerolls with discipline, patience, and strategy, they can build a bankroll and even generate consistent earnings without any financial investment.

A23 Poker Professor Tips

Given the unique challenges of freeroll tournaments, here are some key strategies to maximise your chances of success:

  • Patience is key: Resist the urge to join the all-in frenzy. Play tight and selectively, waiting for premium hands or strong starting positions.
  • Value bet aggressively: When you hold a strong hand, bet and raise aggressively to extract maximum value from weaker hands.
  • Bluff sparingly: With aggressive players prevalent, bluffing can be risky. Focus on value betting and avoid unnecessary bluffs.
  • Pay attention to stack sizes: In freerolls, stack sizes fluctuate rapidly. Adjust your playing style accordingly. If you have a large stack, you can afford to be more patient and selective. With a short stack, you may need to play more aggressively to stay in contention.
  • Observe and adapt: Pay close attention to how other players are playing. Identify aggressive players and avoid unnecessary confrontations with them. Look for opportunities to exploit weaker players.
  • Focus on tournament structure: Understand the blind structure and tournament pace. Adjust your strategy accordingly. In turbo tournaments, play more aggressively as the blinds increase rapidly.

To solidify these concepts, I encourage you to actively participate in the daily ₹1K Turbo or ₹3K Finder’s freerolls available on the A23 Poker app. Alternatively, don’t miss the exciting ₹25K Sunset freeroll held daily at 6 PM.

While playing these freerolls, remember to:

  • Observe your opponents: Pay close attention to their betting patterns, tendencies, and how they react to your actions.
  • Analyse your own play: Review your hands after each session. Identify any leaks in your game, such as over-bluffing, calling too wide, or playing too passively.
  • Maintain discipline: Avoid emotional swings and stick to your pre-determined strategy. Don’t let the aggressive nature of freerolls sway you from your plan.
  • Focus on hand selection: Be patient and selective with your starting hands. Only play premium hands or strong starting positions in early positions, and loosen up slightly as you move to later positions.
  • Manage your stack size: Be aware of your stack size relative to the blinds and adjust your playing style accordingly.
