WSOP Poker Hall Of Fame 2022 Nominee: Josh Arieh

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) recently announced its nominee list for this year’s Poker Hall of Fame. The list includes some of the most popular and well-deserving names from the global poker community. Every year, one player is honoured by being inducted into the prestigious Poker Hall of Fame. 

This year, 10 people have been nominated, one of whom will be inducted into the WSOP 2022 Poker Hall of Fame. But what makes these ten players worth the nomination from a sea of so many other poker folks? Let’s find out. In this series of articles, we will bring the achievements, records, wins, cashes, poker journey and even controversies of each of the 10 nominees of the year. In this article, we will talk about Josh Arieh. 

Why is Josh Arieh nominated for the 2022 WSOP Poker Hall of Fame?

Josh Arieh was born on 26th September 1974 in Rochester, New York, as Joshua Arieh. He is a professional poker player currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia. The 47-year-old started his professional poker career in the year 1999. Arieh has four WSOP bracelets to flaunt, three of which he won in Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) games, and 58 in the money (ITM) finishes at the WSOP, the highest being his third-place finish at the WSOP 2004 Main Event, where he cashed an impressive $2,500,000. Additionally, he has finished runner-up in three WSOP events, along with making it to 19 WSOP final tables to date. Ever since he won his bracelet in 1999, he has successfully cashed at every WSOP edition so far, except for 2003.

The pro player has also played at the World Poker Tour (WPT) and European Poker Tour (EPT). Although he does not have a title in these series so far, he has cashed 10 times at WPT and one time at the EPT. He also final-tabled twice at WPT. 

He won his first-ever WSOP gold bracelet in 1999. He shipped the Limit Texas Hold’em event in the 1999 edition of WSOP for a top prize of $202,800. The following year, he ended up at the runner-up spot at the 2000 WSOP Pot Limit Omaha event. This event was won by poker legend Johnny Chan. In the following years, he had a dry run at the series, as he did not have any notable progress though he did cash twice in 2001 and 2002, respectively.

His next notable progress brought the biggest cash of his career at the 2004 WSOP. The following year, Arieh won his second WSOP bracelet at the 2005 WSOP in a Pot Limit Omaha event beating Chris Ferguson in the heads-up. Here he bagged $381,600 as the top prize. The next notable finish of his career came during the WSOP 2014, where he finished second in the $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em – Eight Handed event.

His next bracelet came more than a decade later in the 2021 WSOP, and how? He won two bracelets in this edition. First, by nailing the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha event for a sum of $204,766. Later he shipped the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better for $484,791, thus proving his expertise in the PLO variation of the game.

In 2021, Arieh beat poker legend Phil Hellmuth to earn the 2021 WSOP Player of the Year title. It was surprising to many to see him win the title since Hellmuth had recorded the most final tables in a single edition that year. However, Arieh cashed 11 times in the series, which helped him win the title. Arieh, himself was so shocked that he tweeted the following:

As of 2021, only three people have the record of finishing third or better at the WSOP Main Events they’ve played and second or better in the $50,000 buy-in The Poker Players Championship event by WSOP. Arieh is one of the only three, the other two being Poker Hall of Famers Scotty Nguyen, and Phil Hellmuth.

As per Hendon Mob, Arieh has $10,522,300 in total live tournament earnings so far, with more than $6,800,000 coming from WSOP events. He ranks 101st in the all-time money list, 52nd in the United States money list and 2nd in Georgia’s all-time money list. His Global Poker Index (GPI) ranking stands at 47th. 

With the 2022 WSOP currently underway at Bally’s and Paris Casino in Las Vegas and the pro currently in action, the numbers are sure to see a spike. He has already cashed at eight events at this year’s edition. And with the nomination, Arieh is all set to give his best at this year’s edition. Only time will tell if this Georgia-based pro is inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame this year.

Every year, one player is inducted into the coveted Poker Hall of Fame. The WSOP 2022 Poker Hall of Fame has announced a list of 10 players, one of whom will be inducted this year. The 32 living members, who are already inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame,  will cast their votes, and allocate a ballot of 10 total points. The person with the maximum votes will be selected as the Poker Hall of Famer. The winner will be announced on 10th July 2022, alongside the final table of the 2022 WSOP Main Event at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas.
