5 Unique Poker Terms You Need To Know

Poker is more than just a card game—it’s a world of strategy, skill, and a unique vocabulary. While most players are familiar with terms like “flop” or “bluff,” there’s a hidden language that adds depth to the game. If you’re curious to expand your poker knowledge, here are five fascinating poker terms you might not have heard of but are sure to enrich your gameplay experience.

Unveiling the Poker Lingo

1. Backdoor Draw

Imagine you’re playing poker, and you need two specific cards to complete your hand. For example, you have 7 and 8, and you need a 6 or a 9 to make a straight. If the flop comes Q-10-9, you’ll need one of those cards on the next two streets to complete your hand. This is called a backdoor draw.

2. Gutshot

This refers to a specific type of straight draw where you need just one card to complete it. For example, while playing poker, the flop comes down 4♠ 8♣ 9♥. You have Q♠ J♠ in your hand. You’re one card away from completing a straight (Q, J, 10, 9, 8). This is known as a gutshot straight draw.

3. Straddle

Imagine you’re playing poker. Before you even see your cards, there’s an extra bet placed by the player sitting to          the left of the big blind. This extra bet is called a “straddle.” It’s usually twice the size of the big blind.

Example: If the big blind is $10, the player to the left of the big blind can choose to “straddle” by placing an                extra bet of $20 before seeing their cards. This makes the total pot $30 before anyone has even looked at their              cards.

4. Donk Bet

This is a bet made “out of position” by a player who didn’t initiate the last aggressive action. For instance, imagine raising pre-flop and the big blind calls. If the big blind then bets first on the flop, that’s a donk bet. Although often seen as a weak play, skilled players can use it strategically for bluffing or protecting strong hands.

5. Cold Call

This is when a player calls a raise without re-raising themselves. For example, if the first player raises pre-flop and the second player re-raises, the third player can cold call by simply calling the second player’s raise.
