5 Tips To Survive In the Money In Multi Table Tournaments

So, you’ve survived the bubble, and you’re officially “in the money” in a Multi-Table Tournament (MTT) – congratulations! But the real challenge begins now. How do you navigate this crucial stage, maximizing your chip stack and maneuvering your way towards the final table and a bigger payday? Here are five essential tips to help you come up with trumps in the money bubble and beyond.

1. Understand the Payout Structure

In most Multi-Table Tournaments (MTTs), the payouts incrementally increase as you move from a minimum cash to the final table. Significant leaps in prize money typically occur when you get closer to the final few spots. For instance, in a large tournament, the difference between finishing 45th and 35th might be modest, but the difference between finishing 15th and 5th is substantially larger. Keep this in mind as you play, but avoid letting it unduly influence your early strategy. 

 2. Survive the First Wave of Knockouts

Right after the bubble bursts, many short-stacked players will go all-in to try and double up or go home. If you’re short-stacked, look for good hands to push with. If you have a medium or large stack, you can afford to be a bit more cautious and wait for this initial rush to pass. This can help you move up a few spots on the payout ladder without taking unnecessary risks.

3. Be Ready for Preflop Action

As the tournament progresses, you’ll notice that some players with medium or large stacks will continue to play tight, hoping to move up the payout ladder. This is a good time to steal blinds and antes from these players. In faster-paced tournaments, expect more all-ins, so be prepared to call with strong hands. In slower-paced tournaments, there will be more post-flop play, but players will often be cautious.

4. Use Your Chips Wisely

If you have a big stack, leverage it to put pressure on your opponents. Raise and re-raise to force them into tough decisions. This can help you accumulate more chips and maintain your dominant position. When playing against short stacks, avoid raising with weak hands that you’ll have to fold if they push all-in. Instead, be the aggressor, and push all-in yourself, forcing them to play only their strongest hands. Against medium stacks, you can semi-bluff or outright bluff if they show weakness.

5. Adjust for Short-Handed Play

As the tournament gets closer to the final table, you’ll often find yourself playing at short-handed tables. This means you need to loosen up your starting hand requirements and be more aggressive. Hands that might be marginal in a full-ring game become stronger in short-handed play. Be aware of who else is ramping up their aggression and adjust your strategy accordingly. 

Navigating the “in the money” stage of an MTT requires a balance of patience and aggression. Recognize the changing dynamics of the tournament and be ready to shift gears as needed.
