34 held as Gambling Racket Raided in Vasai

A gambling racket working from a lodge in Vasai near the Mumbai-Ahmedabad freeway was busted on Friday. 34 people including the gamblers were arrested in an open plot despite the lockdown, due to the coronavirus. Palghar Superintendent Dattatray Shinde took action on a tip-off and raided the place in the early hour of the day. The arrested had come from different parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Gujarat like Mankhurd, Vile Parle, Ghatkopar, Andheri, Dahisar, Mira-Bhayander, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Surat, Vapi and Valsad.

Police mentioned a line of vehicles parked outside the lodge which caught the eye of the police informer who alerted the crime department. The police recovered money and items worth INR 11 lakhs. The accused were noticed in masks but there were no social distancing guidelines followed. They were booked under sections 188 (disobedience), 269 (unfold of an infection) of IPC,Catastrophe Administration Act and Maharashtra Prevention of Playing Act. Although, the arrested were granted bail on Saturday by the Vasai court.

The Waliv native police department was caught unaware with the raid organised by the Palghar’s crime department. An enquiry might be performed in opposition to the Waliv police for not taking any action in opposition to the playing at the lodge. Palghar’s Shinde will initiate an inquiry against the Waliv police, “Based on the inquiry, we will take action against the Waliv police,” said Shinde.

This wasn’t the first time an inquiry was initiated against the waliv police. In 2018, a similar incident occurred, the Palghar superintendent took action against five officers of Waliv police station as they did not take action against a gamabling den in a resort along the highway. These illegal gambling dens were run by Matka King Babu Nadar which were  illegally operated  from such hideouts.

In Bhayandar, four people including two matka operators were apprehended, gambling material and cash was seized from the spot. The Navghar police failed to act against the illegal activities which prompted the Deputy SP to form a special team to bust the gambling den.
