2 betting kingpins arrested in Jaipur

As per a recent news report in the Times of India, a couple of betting kingpins linked to the underworld were recently arrested in Jaipur on Sunday. The Indian Premier League (IPL) always sees the highest number of sports bets recorded through the year and an initial investigation indicates INR 3,000 Crore in betting transactions through these bookies in IPL 2019.

Ramesh Kumar Gangwal and Deepak Maheshwari were the betting kingpins arrested by Crime Branch, both said to be bosses of an international betting syndicate. The duo is reported to have run a betting network through international sportsbook Betfair, which stopped operations in India earlier this year.

“Gangwal and Maheswari ran the network through a betting website Betfair which is banned in India. They used VPN route to access the website to circumvent the ban and used the betting prices listed on the website as a base price for bookies,” said Additional Commissioner of Police, Prashan Kumar Khamesra.

Gangwal used to provide leased lines and franchises of Betfair through a Punjab-based ‘super-boss’ who is unknown at the moment. Gangwal was also arrested in relation to the infamous 2013 IPL betting scandal which saw the likes of Indian pacer Sreesanth getting life bans.

It is said that betting also took place on tennis matches and not just cricket. It is also being said that the duo has connections with the international betting mafia of Pakistan and UAE. While India is trying hard to legalize sports betting in the country, such type of illegal activities proves to be major setbacks.

In November last year, the All Indian Gaming Federation (AIGF) wrote a letter to PM Modi asking for the shutdown of such off-shore betting websites which can be easily accessed in India.
