Rummy is one of the most popular card games in India right now. While it was earlier played mostly at festivals, gatherings or certain occasions, it has now gone on to be a career option for online gamers. It is also worth noting that the trend of playing this game online is taking over the country.
One of the main reasons why rummy continues to be a household game in India is given the number of variations it boasts. From Oklahoma Rummy to Shanghai Rummy to Contract Rummy, this game has a lot of variations in which it can be played. For people new to rummy – this game consists of three widely popular variants, i.e. Points Rummy, Pool Rummy, and Deals Rummy.
Given how much popularity the game has in India, it is also important to understand all the nuances which make each style of rummy different. In this article, we focus on two particular variations, Deals Rummy and Points Rummy.
While there is no denying the similarities in all types of rummy, there are subtle differences which make every variation a different one. With a macroscopic view in consideration, the differences in the rummy, most of the time, are either based on the point calculation or how the winnings are distributed. Let’s have a look at the Points Rummy and Pool Rummy differences and understand both games better.
While we look to share all the main differences between Deals Rummy and Points Rummy, it is important to note the similarities in both versions of rummy as well. While quite a few key factors differentiate them, both games have a lot of similarities which should not be missed. For example, Deals Rummy and Points Rummy are 13-card variants of Rummy. Both the games require one-two 1-2 decks of cards to play the game and are played between two-six players.
One of the biggest differences between Deals Rummy and Points Rummy is that the latter is a game wherein players play for points after pre-deciding the rupee variant. In Deals Rummy, the winner of every round gets the chips from the losing player at the end of each deal, depending on their score. The player who ends up collecting the highest chip count is the winner.

While in Points Rummy, the winner is determined when a certain player declares a valid set. A valid set consists of a pure sequence as well as impure sequences. Following a declaration, it is checked if it is valid. Following a valid declaration, the points of all the other players are calculated. If the players are playing 101 Points Rummy then the player who reaches 101 points becomes the first one to be eliminated.
Speaking about differences, players are usually ranked in the order of their existing chip value count in Deals Rummy. So the player who has the highest chip count will be ranked at the top. However, in Points Rummy, the points calculated are quite straightforward. Now that all the facts and key differences are laid out, we hope this article helped you understand Deals Rummy and Points Rummy better.
