Gutshot Rummy Dictionary – Pure Sequence

Today we will look at one of the rummy terms which is an important thing to learn and keep in mind while playing rummy. A sequence in rummy is a combination of three or more cards of consecutive ranks and belonging to the same suit. A sequence can be of two types: a pure sequence and an impure sequence. Today we shall discuss a pure sequence.

What is a Pure Sequence?

A pure sequence is a group of three or more cards of the same suit, placed in consecutive order. In order to make a pure sequence, a player cannot use a wild card or a joker. Using a wild card will make the sequence an impure one. For example, a group of A,2,3 of hearts is a pure sequence. Similarly, a group of 7, 8, 9, 10 all of spades is also a pure sequence. 

However, a group of K,A,2 whether suited or not suited cannot make a valid sequence. The cards must be in the order A,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,J,Q,K.

Why Pure Sequence?

The name pure sequence is given simply because all the cards in the sequence are purely number or picture cards placed in a proper order. The sequence does not make use of any wild card or joker to complete the chronology and hence the term ‘pure’ sequence. 

Importance of Pure Sequence

As per the rules, in order to win in the game of rummy a player must have at least one pure sequence. A winning rummy hand must have one pure sequence and the other sequence can be a pure or impure one. One cannot declare without a pure sequence in hand.
