Tesla To Replace BYJU’S As Team India’s Sponsor: As per the reports, BYJU’S wants to withdraw from the sponsorship agreement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). If sources are to be believed, the EdTech company has decided to optimize their media spending in India, which is one of the significant reasons for pulling out of the contract.
It comes as a surprise because recently, BYJU’S signed football GOAT Lionel Messi just before the FIFA World Cup 2022 as their global brand ambassador. However, they will continue as sponsors of Men in Blue till the end of their tenure in March 2023. Reports also suggest that the Apex Council committee will likely take the final decision.
If the news is accurate, it is suspicious why BYJU’S extended its deal with BCCI until March 2023 for $55 Million when the original agreement ended in March 2022. It looks like the BCCI is looking for a complete makeover of the national team after a disappointing year. It started with Mastercard being the new title sponsor for all the matches organized by BCCI (men and women) till 2023, after Paytm pulled out of the deal. Paytm has been with the BCCI since 2015.

BYJU’S took over as the primary sponsor of the national team from Oppo in 2019. Before Oppo, it was Star India from 2014-2107. Previously, Sahara India, who sponsored the team from 2002-2013, had the most extended association among other sponsors in the history of Indian cricket. The second longest tenure was that of ITC from 1993-2002.
When Sahara India Pariwar ended all ties after being ‘let down’ by BCCI, the Subroto Roy-owned group may again compete to get significant sponsorship for the national team after being the longest sponsors for both team India and league matches.
Looking at the mass popularity of the game in India, it is most likely that the Tata Group would be the significant competitor as the Indian multinational conglomerate group has already replaced Vivo as the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for two seasons, 2022 and 2023. Also, Tata Group is all set to launch Nano in March 2023, and the brand will look to push Nano as a part of its marketing efforts for IPL.
Mastercard has acquired the new title sponsorship for BCCI till 2023, and it’s most likely to be one of the favourites for a longer tenure. They have also signed the former captain cool, MS Dhoni as the brand ambassador for four years.
Reliance Jio is going over and above to strengthen its footprints internationally by acquiring a franchise in Cricket South Africa’s T20 league. This year, Nita Ambani, the representative of India, led a successful bid to host the prestigious International Olympic Committee Session.
Consequently, the session will be hosted at Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai, in 2023. Interestingly, the IOC session will return to India after a gap of 40 years, and the last session was hosted in 1983 in New Delhi. The Jio group is also the proud owner of IPL’s most successful franchise, Mumbai Indians, who have won the league five times. This itself proves that the Jio family is also one of the favourites and a strong contender.
After a poor performance at the T20 World Cup this year, the BCCI has gone on a clean-up drive. Let’s hope for a new selection committee. With new sponsors, the game and the look of the national team could improve and give the team new confidence to go and play the best game at the forthcoming World Cup 2023.
Some of the more superstitious Indian cricket fans rejoiced when they learned that BYJU’S might be dropping their sponsorship of the jersey. They believe that the sponsorship deal was unlucky for the team because they have yet to win a major tournament since it began.
