What is Michigan Rummy?

The variations in rummy are countless and many of them are equally enjoyable as the common Indian Rummy. Out of these variations, there is one called Michigan Rummy. The game is simple and easy to understand especially among players who are not familiar with any form of the game. Michigan Rummy is also called ‘Boodle’ and its rules can sometimes be confused with other rummy games.

There are three to eight players that can play the card game. The objective of the game is to get rid of all the cards in your hand and collect chips from any one of the four boodle cards.

What are boodle cards?

Boodle cards in Michigan Rummy are the four cards that are taken from a separate deck and kept in the centre. The ace of hearts, king of clubs, queen of diamonds, and jack of spades are the boodle cards. These cards remain in the centre for the rest of the game.

How to play Michigan Rummy?

Before the game begins, every player apart from the dealer will place one chip on each of the four boodle cards. After this, the dealer will place two chips on each of the cards.

Cards are then dealt to each player from the left of the dealer and will be distributed among all the players until they are over. Note that not all players will have the same number of cards.

The player to the immediate left of the dealer will start the game and put in the lowest card of any suit that they have. A sequence needs to be maintained, so any player that has the next high card in the same suit will play next and so on. The sequence will stop only by the ace of the same suit or the dead hand. A new suit can only be started by the lowest card in the suit.

If the player plays an identical card to any one of the four boodle cards, then they can take all the chips from that card. But they start without the lowest card in the suit then they need to pay one chip to each of their competitors and cannot take chips from any of the boodle cards after that. The winner of the game (the one who plays all the cards) will then get to take one chip for every card left in their opponent’s hand.
