Taking Care Of Mental Health While Playing Card Games

Playing cards during festivals, get togethers, tournaments, fun events etc. keep us happy. But we seldom realize that our mental health is severely under pressure due to it. Online rummy is an indulgence of choice for many people who want to take a break from the routine. It is thrilling, its profitable and all that. But online rummy can also bring a bunch of issues with it if you aren’t watchful. Here’s a look at the popular issues around mental health and some suggestions on how you can address them.

Know when to stop – Always on the go isn’t healthy on the wallet or on the mind!

Most online games carry the label of being difficult to get away from.  And online rummy is no different. Players need to understand their personal threshold before they get into the online game. In the excitement of the game, it is easy to forget time, it feels natural to keep spending more money, and if a player keeps winning, then motivation runs high and there is no stopping.

To keep oneself from going overboard, here are a few tricks:

  • Set a reminder or an alarm on your phone – time yourself thus so you can take a breather, reconcile with the situation and then decide if you want to play further or not
  • Play at a time where you will force yourself to stop. Some players choose to play on the everyday commute – this force them to stop the game once they reach office or home in the evening
  • Set up a spend limit – the rummy portals may not have a limit setting mechanism, but your accounts do. You can enable the ‘spend limit’ option and make sure you stop short of going overboard.

Anxiety issues – what usually runs wild in the minds of online rummy players:

There are several aspects of the game which could cause you to feel to feel anxious.  Being a beginner and not knowing how to play, wanting to make a lot of money in a hurry, worry over safety security and unfamiliarity of online transactions are all commonly experienced issues. There are also other anxiety issues which are societal, such as the fear of being pointed at for being an online Rummy player. Conservative family especially may not take rummy gaming easily. The biggest anxiety is that of losing money. Even if it is a little sum, not many they have the emotional mettle to bid adieu.

Here’s some food for thought on addressing anxiety issues:

In all of these cases, one can practise the age-old technique of ‘breathe-in-breathe-out’…. once the mind feels relatively calm, take stock of the situation. Understand where the core pain points are. And then research on addressing these.  For simple things like inexperience or unfamiliarity with technology, practice can remedy it. Family or societal issues also can be sorted to some extent. But if it is anxiety over losing money, then first clearly and confidently decide how much you are ready to lose, not how much you are ready to spend. When you reach the limit, stop and switch over to the free online rummy versions.
