India’s Richest Man Gautam Adani Plays Rummy?

Rummy is a household game in India. But would you believe that India’s and Asia’s richest man Gautam Adani plays the game every day?! No, we’re not cooking stories here. Recently, during an interview with IndiaTV, Adani confessed that he plays rummy with his wife daily after work.

Adani was being interviewed on IndiaTV’s famous show ‘Aap Ki Adalat.’ Towards the end of the interview, the industrialist was sharing how he spends time with his family. That’s when the host of the show and famous journalist Rajat Sharma intervened to reveal that Adani plays card games with his family. The businessman chuckled and joked that this information was meant to be a secret.

The 60-year-old billionaire went on to add that he usually plays rummy with his wife, Priti, after getting back home from work. This includes a good 8-10 games of rummy every day. He did not shy away from admitting that his wife ends up winning most of these games.

Rummy has been one of the most popular card games in India and globally for generations. The COVID-19 pandemic gave the game a further push, with several online rummy sites allowing people to play the game online, thus increasing the game’s popularity.

Gautam Adani IndiaTV interview:

The online rummy market in India was estimated to be valued at about $335 Million in 2019. However, according to a Redseer survey, the market is expected to cross the $1.4 Billion mark by 2024, thanks to its growing popularity and number of rummy sites cropping up.

Adani is the chairman and founder of India’s leading multinational conglomerate, Adani Group. The company is involved in port development and operations in the country. Apart from that, he is also the president of the Adani Foundation. According to Forbes, he boasted a net worth of US$138.1 Billion in December 2022, while Bloomberg reported his net worth as $133 Billion in the December 2022. These stats make him the wealthiest person in Asia and India and the third richest person globally.

Although rummy has been classified as a game of skill by the Supreme Court of India and is considered legal, a few states still contemplate rummy as a game of chance, and thus prohibit the game in their respective states. A notable personality like Adani admitting to playing the card game, only proves that the game is amplifying in the country.
