How Confirmation Bias Affects Your Rummy Game – And How to Overcome It?

You have played hundreds of online Rummy games. You have developed your tactics, your opening games, your superstitions, whatever that may be. What happens when it is your brain that is working against you?

Ever heard about confirmation bias, a psychological barrier that can work against you?

This blog deconstructs what confirmation bias is, how it manifests without your knowledge in your Rummy game, and how to overcome it to become a more agile and astute player.

What Is Confirmation Bias?

Confirmation bias is a psychological shortcut: we only like and believe the information that supports our assumptions, and reject information that contradicts or questions our assumptions.

That may present itself as:

  • Hanging on to a strategy that was successful a few times, but it is not always effective in big games.
  • Makes you believe entirely that victories are because of strategies that have worked before, dismissing defeats as a matter of bad luck
  • Resist any rummy tips or game-play strategies that are contrary to what you are already following.
  • Falling into a confirmation bias is natural; we are all guilty. However, in Rummy, a game which involves logic, probability and observation, confirmation bias may cause more damage than you expect.

How Confirmation Bias Affects You in Rummy

1. Holding On to Losing Trends

Imagine that you are holding middle cards with the hope of making a sequence such as 6s and 7s. It worked once – and now you do it all the time, even when the odds are not in your favour. That is confirmation bias: recollecting the instance it worked, and forgetting the numerous occasions it did not.

2. Ignoring Core Strategy (Discarding High Cards)

You may have won a few games holding high-value cards such as Aces and Kings early in the game, but veteran players know that unless they are already a part of a sequence, they should get rid of them early. Keeping them in your hand makes you vulnerable to losing by a significant margin, as ungrouped cards determine your points at the end of the game.

However, in this case, the confirmation bias may drive you to disregard this reasoning and keep going without a proper strategy.

3. Blaming the Cards Instead of Your Strategy

Lost a few games consecutively? You are perhaps thinking, It is just bad hands, instead of checking your decisions. It is a classic example that you may be caught in an endless circle of confirmation bias, when you assume that there is nothing wrong with your strategy and simply luck was not in your favour.

How to Overcome Confirmation Bias While Playing Rummy

  • Ensure you put primary emphasis on logic and probability in Rummy. Discard high-value cards out at an early stage when they are not in a meld. Follow strategies that significantly increase your chances rather than what worked before.
  • Check your game history or game replay (if available) to identify the points where preconceived notions carried you over. Take note of such instances and ensure that you do not repeat the same mistakes.
  • Try out various strategies in low-stakes games. For instance, check how early drops, aggressive high-card discards, or baits perform. You may find more ground with strategies than hanging on to mere confirmation bias.
  • Follow rummy tutorials, read blogs from expert authors and follow rummy experts. What you discover, contrary to your beliefs, allows you to explore new opportunities and charter new territories. Doing this process will enable you to find golden nuggets that you have been missing out on.

Rummy = Skill + Psychology

Online Rummy is not just about mastering the rules; it is a game of self-knowledge and self-awareness. Confirmation bias may produce short-term victories, but it may not push you further, as it limits your experimentation. However, when you are ready to question assumptions, review your game and modify your strategy, you will continue to improve your game and smash all psychological barriers.
