Card snooping in James Bond’s Goldfinger and Gin Rummy

James Bond lover? Yes, this article is for you. Here’s a snippet from one of his iconic films ‘Goldfinger’ that has some card game snooping and serious James Bond business!

After destroying a drug laboratory in Latin America, MI6 agent James Bond vacations in Miami Beach. His superior officer asks Bond to observe bullion dealer Auric Goldfinger at the hotel there. Bond discovers Goldfinger cheating at a high-stakes gin rummy game, with the help of an employee Jill Masterson, who prompts him using binoculars and a one-way radio. Gin rummy is a simple card game played amongst 2 players in which the goal is to meld all the cards into runs or sets before the opponent. In the film Golfinger, there is a brief turning point that leads to the loss of Goldfinger.

Goldfinger opens with an acquaintance of Bond meeting 007 at a Miami airport and requesting that he observe a two-handed Canasta game between himself and Auric Goldfinger. Bond’s friend suspects Goldfinger of cheating, and offers to pay Bond to confirm his suspicions. Bond discovers that Goldfinger’s secretary had been using binoculars to spy on his friend’s hand from her hotel room, and inform about the cards to Goldfinger. Here’s a video from the film that could help you get an idea of the scene:

These are some things you must remember before you play Gin rummy or any card game for that matter.

  • Surveillance is everywhere but one must know the protocols followed in the place that you play at.
  • Cheating does not necessarily take place in this manner, and hence you must always opt for a foolproof method of playing
  • Card games are dependant maximum on how you choose to play the cards provided

Here’s a pair of Bausch & Lomb binoculars from the film Goldfinger that were at Auction Team Brekker in Cologne, Germany which was valued at $17,000. This is the iconic pair of binoculars used in the film during the scene.
