Basic Rules Of Rummy

We have reached the end of 2021 and we know how difficult the last two years have been. Looks like COVID-19 is here to stay. Also, it is mentally exhausting to stay at home all day for a longer duration. We know you all need something to refresh your minds and energise your mood. We would suggest you try online rummy and give your mind the much needed break.

Excited? But before that, you need to know the basics. You can leave that to us because by the end of this article you are going to be all pumped up and ready to play your first online rummy game! So, this game can be played with two or more players.

Deal: You will need two decks of cards with the jokers. Each player will be dealt a total of 13 cards. The rest will be placed face down at the centre and these are called the closed deck. Any one card will be picked from this set and announced as the wild joker. It is important to remember that in a rummy game, the rank of cards in each suit is in the ascending order as shown – Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen and King.

The rummy scheme: The whole concept of the game is to form valid sets and sequences. In order to win the game, you will need to arrange at least two sequences and one should be a pure sequence at any cost. The remaining can either be sets or valid sequences. The one who is quick to meld the cards perfectly and declares his/her hand is the winner.

Sets and sequences: A sequence is made of cards from the same suit where three or more of the cards are arranged in a consecutive order. A sequence that is formed without a joker is a pure one (5 6 7). Impure sequence contains a joker (3♠ 4♠ 5♠ 10♥). Here 10 is the wild joker instead of 6♠). A set is slightly different as they are made of cards with the same rank but from a different suit and can contain three or more cards (A A A♦).

Keeping score: The Ace card from all the suits has 1 point. The face cards – King, Queen, Jack and Ace carry 10 points each and the value of the rest of the cards is equivalent to their face value. A player can either pick the card from the open deck which is discarded by the other player if they find it useful or pick one from the closed deck. In each round, it’s a must to discard a card from your hand after picking a card from the closed deck.

Winner: Once the winner declares his/her hand, the scores are counted. The values of those cards that are not part of any combination are usually added and the one with the highest points ends up being the losing player. The aim is to have the lowest score possible.

By following all the above mentioned rules, if you are the first one to perfectly form the sets and sequences you can make the declaration and win a rummy game! Make sure not to declare in haste but at the right moment. So what are you waiting for? The online rummy world awaits you!
