Andhra Pradesh Govt Files SLP Against HC Order Seeking Clarity On Online Rummy
As per the latest news reports on online rummy, Andhra Pradesh government has filed a special leave petition (SLP) in Supreme Court (SC) against a High Court (HC) order to scrap the formation of a committee meant to investigate whether online rummy is a game of skill or chance.
The news reports state that HC in its order dated 31st January, stated that a committee will be formed consisting of a judicial member, independent-technical, non-technical members, two people representing online rummy operators, one police officer (Director General rank) as members of committee and one other member representing the government.
The High Court in its order had agreed with online rummy operators that games of skill are different from chance based games. Games of skill cannot be denied the right to freedom of trade and commerce which is guaranteed under Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution.
A ban on online games would be arbitrary in nature, and hence the HC ordered the state government to form a committee which would then examine whether playing online rummy is chance or skill based and if online rummy is subject to any kind of manipulation or fraud.

Recently, the online gaming industry faced a setback when the GST Council imposed a 28% tax on full face value of the bet. This drastically increased the tax liabilities for the firms and many online gaming operators had requested the council to reconsider their decision to levy such a hefty tax.
As per the latest news reports on the online gaming industry in India, ₹45,000 Crore tax is staring at the operators as the tax liability was at 18% given the difference in game of skill and chance. News reports state that the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) will be sending out notices to the gaming firms in this regard.
