Rummy is amongst the most played card games in India! While the game has a lot of varieties and variants, Gin Rummy is one of the most played variants citing its widespread popularity. This two-player variant of rummy is enjoyed as a social game and can be played online as well.

As per reports, rummy was created by Elwood T. Baker and his son in 1909. It remained a local game in New York until 1941 before being publicised across the United States of America since it became a Hollywood fad. Gin Rummy remains to be one of the most widely-played two-player card games. Now that we have dived into the history of the game let’s have a look at how to play Gin Rummy.

Gin Rummy Rules: How to play Gin Rummy

 Let’s take a deep dive and see the rules for Gin Rummy and how to play Gin Rummy. Starting with basics, Gin Rummy is played using a standard deck of 52 cards. Aces are equal to 1 and face cards are worth 10. The goal is to earn 100 points.

The remaining cards are valued with the number they have on the card. Meaning 2s are two points, 3s are three points, and so on. The main objective in gin rummy is to form groups of cards called melds, with the participants looking to be the first player, aiming to reach the predetermined score, which usually is 100 points.

In order for players to win Gin Rummy, one needs to form the meds by either creating sets of the same number or sequences of consecutive numbers in the same suit. A player can win by creating combinations of melds which can be all sets, all runs, or some sets and some runs.

How to play rummy online

 The game starts with each player dealt 10 cards. Once the cards are dealt, the remaining deck cards are placed face-down. It becomes the stockpile with one random card pulled out and placed face-up to form the current pile.

The cards in your hand that form a certain combination or a set are counted as melds, while the unmatched ones are called deadwood. The basic game strategy of this game is to improve hands, which can be done by either forming melds or eliminating deadwood. In an ideal scenario, one should have as little deadwood as possible.

A player can either pick up the face-up card or pass when it’s the first turn. If he/she decides to pass, then the dealer can either pick it up or pass as well. If the dealer also decides to pass, then the player can then draw a card from the stockpile.

Later on, players can continue to draw from the discard pile or stockpile at the end of each turn. However, they must discard one card when they pick one up. Players have to form the above mentioned hands by using the cards that pop up from the pile or are discarded by the other player to win! Once you have 10 points or less of deadwood, you can knock to end the round.

In an ideal scenario, players should look to make a pure set and pure sequence. However, the use of a joker can also be done to create a certain meld. A player can achieve gin when he/she has matched 10 out of 11 cards following the draw phase. The player receives 25 bonus points after achieving gin.

A big gin is achieved if all 11 cards are a part of any sets/sequences prior to knocking. Players are also awarded 50 bonus points for achieving the big gin. If no player is able to gain the gin by the time there are only two cards left in the stockpile, then the game ends in a tie.
