Twitterati Has #Chapri Trending While Rohit Sharma Plays Holi

Yesterday’s clash between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 ended in the former winning the match by 6 runs. Could have been a regular match if the circumstances were normal. But they weren’t. Not for Hardik Pandya at least. Yesterday’s match was proof that Rohit Sharma’s stardom is unparalleled and Pandya can’t do much about it. 

The right-handed batsman was booed in his home state. Fans of Sharma overpowered any fan following Pandya enjoyed before this. Was this surprising? Not really. The day Pandya was announced captain of the Mumbai Indians team, all hell broke loose. Sharma, who led the Mumbai Indians to victory 5 times in IPL history, was replaced and fans of Rohit and MI couldn’t digest this. 

Their hero was no longer the captain and Pandya simply became the villain for taking on that role. Just Google Hardik Pandya and you will see terms like ‘chapri cricketer of India’ and ‘chapri cricketer in world’ popping up. Sad but true. News media too kept up with this trend. Stories of Pandya being called ‘chapri,’ arrogant and selfish flooded the news space. Twitterati is emotional, but also way too brutal. How the new MI captain will handle this scrutiny remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, many on the microblogging site are asking one question—Can Pandya get anything right? His on field decisions yesterday raised many eyebrows. Many believe, not just Pandya’s cricketing skills, but even his acumen as a captain failed miserably. Yes, this could happen to any other captain.

But in the GT vs MI situation, it was not just the failure in the match, that fell in Pandya’s lap, but also the incessant trolling which was served to him on a silver platter. And this was Ahmedabad (no relief in home state). Nobody can deny one thing—Sharma’s fandom, stardom, whatever you may like to call it, knows no boundaries, limits and will be in your face the next time Rohit plays.

For someone like me, who’s not a cricketing expert, but enjoys the game, there is no place on Earth where Pandya can hide. From the media lens, GT vs MI, became less about talent or team and more about star power and Rohit won it, hands down. If you want proof, check out Twitter reactions below which are extreme.
