TNPL 2023 Auction: Most Expensive Picks

The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) has gone on to become a significant professional Twenty20 cricket league in India since its establishment. Started in 2016 by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).The competition has acted as a solid platform which provides young cricketers in Tamil Nadu to showcase their talent as well also promote the sport.

TNPL 2023 will see eight teams representing various districts of Tamil Nadu compete for glory. Salem Spartans, LYCA Kovai Kings, Dindigul Dragons, Nellai Royal King, Chepauk Super Gillies, Ruby Trichy Warriors, iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans and Siechem Madurai Panthers will fight it out to emerge victorious in TNPL 2023.

Sai Sudharsan – 21.6 Lakh – Lyca Kovai Kings

Sai Sudharsan was the biggest winner in the Tamil Nadu Premier League player auction. Taking place for the first time, TNPL 2023 auction saw teams not shy away from spending money on star players across both days. Kovai Kings walked away with the most expensive pick in TNPL 2023 auction, playing ₹21.60 Lakh for Sai Sudharsan.  

Irconically, this TNPL deal will see the left-handed top-order batter earn more in the TNPL than in the IPL as his contract with Gujarat Titans(GT) sees him pocket ₹20 Lakh. It is worth noting that the Kovai Kings spend a major chuck of their budget (₹70 Lakh) for GT star.  Apart from Sai Sudharsan, R. Sanjay Yadav and R. Sonu Yadav emerged as other big winners in the auction.

The promising cricketer has been playing for Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) for quite a long time with his performances often seeing  the TNCA do well across various competitions in recent years. Sudharsan is known for his aggressive approach and the ability to play big shots whenever needed. It is also worth noting that he is a handy off-spinner and can also turn an arm over and take wickets if needed. Citing his talent and and dedication, Sudharsan surely is a player to keep an eye out on as he has the potential to become an elite cricketer who could also go on to play India.

Sanjay Yadav- 17.6 Lakh – Chepauk Super Gillies

Starting off with a base price of 2 Lakh, Sanjay Yadav managed to get a contract worth 17.60 Lakh from Nellai Royal Kings.  The left-handed batsman and also specializes in slow left-arm orthodox bowling. Ramsingh Sanjay Yadav has a big career ahead of him after he  decided to professional player by shifting to the Meghalaya cricket team in the 2019-20 season.

Since making his List A debut in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on 24th September 2019, the all-rounder has started a create a certain hype around him. Later on, Yadav went on to make his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy as well and impressed everyone with his performance. He ended up taking nine wickets in the first innings and was the third-best performer in Indian domestic first-class cricket that year. 

The bowling all-rounder has played over 17 List A games scoring 394 runs while registering a high score of 81. He has scored 533 runs in his 33 games in the T20 format. The bowling all-rounder has also recorded 23 wickets in 17 List A games and 19 wickets in 33 T20 matches.

With consistent performances in domestic cricket Yadav eventually continued to shine and was eventually handed an opportunity to play in the  Indian Premier Legaue. He was signed by the Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2021 and his career ahs been on the rise since them. He continues to play various List A Games and has hopes to represent the national team.

Sonu Yadav – 15.2 Lakh- Nellai Royal Kings

Sonu Yadav, has shocked every cricketing fan and has gone on to become one of the finest hunts in the TNPL 2023 auction.  The 23-year-old grabbed a deal worth a 15.2 Lakh contract from Nellai Royal Kings while starting off with a base price of 2 Lakh in TNPL 2023 auction. 

He has been making waves in the domestic circuit and is a promising India cricketer who has been capturing eyeballs with his performances.  The left-arm orthodox spinner is also a handy lower-order batsman who was born in Chennai 23 March 1998. 

The bowling all-rounder had played 11 List A games, scoring 82 runs with the highest score of 37. Speaking of his bowling stats, Yadav had picked ten wickets in 11 List A games and nine wickets in 5 T20 matches. He has earlier featured for Chepauk Super Gillies, Karaikudi Kaalai, and Ruby Trichy Warriors in the TNPL.

Yadav’s performances in the domestic circuit earned him a place in the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad for the Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023). His success is a result of hard work and dedication to cricket. The all rounder has always been looking to develop himself and work on his bowling variations to add a few more tricks and deliveries to his arsenal.

Yadav has been eager to become a potent bowler with his ability to bowl pocket wickets in the middle overs making him a strong and valuable asset to any team he plays for. With age on his side, Yadav can go on to become a key player for Tamil Nadu in the future.

Harish Kumar – 12.8 Lakh- Chepauk Super Gillies

Despite starting off with a base price of 2 Lakh, Harish Kumar, managed to grab a 12.8 Lakh contract from Chepauk Super Gillies. The talented bowling all-rounderhas made a name for himself in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) and surprised cricket fans by securing such a lucrative contract during the TNPL 2023 auction.

Starting off as his cricketing career during school days, Kumar developed himself into a fine a left-handed batsman and left-arm spinner. His all round make him a vital member of the team.  He debuted in the TNPL back during the 2018 edition of the tournament and featured for the Madurai Panthers.

His performances made him a popular name in the league as he played quite a few crucial roles in leading the team to victory. Kumar continued his impressive form during his three year stint with the Panthers. He has also featured for Chepauk Super Gillies and Lyca Kovai Kings in the past. 

In his cricketing career, the bowling all-rounder had played four T20 games, where the right handed batter had smashed nine runs. Regarding his bowling stats, Kumar had picked one wickets in four T20 matches. Kumar is considered one of the most talented all-rounders in the TNPL. He his skills and ability to remain calm under pressure makes him a solid pick who could soon hind himself in the Indian cricket team.

Swapnil Singh – 12 Lakh- Madurai Panthers

Singh has been making headlines with his performances in domestic cricket when he played for the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) team Lyca Kovai Kings. He played a vital role in the team’s campaign and was even named the player of the match in one of the games in his initial days.

His impressive TNPL performances caught the attention of the state team selectors, which led to him getting a call up for Tamil Nadu’s T20 squad. He also went on to play for the state in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, Singh achieved impressive bowling figures of 6 for 91 which was the second-best in that edition. Swapnil played only 76 domestic matches, with 31 of them taking place in 2014-15 and 2015-16. It also saw him get an opportunity in the IPL after Kings XI Punjab bought him ₹10 Lakh during the 2016 auction. He has also been a part of the Mumbai Indians squad but could not get any opportunity to play in the IPL.

Having begun his cricketing journey very soon, Swapnil’s consistent performances in domestic cricket makes him a player to look out for. Teams were fight for him during the TNPL 2023 auction and go big to acquire his services. Swapnil K Singh shocked every cricketing fan out there with a base price of ₹2 Lakh as the bowling all-rounder managed to grab a ₹12 Lakh contract from Madurai Panthers. Singh is a talented cricketer who has already made a name for himself in domestic cricket. With his impressive performances, he has caught selectors’ attention and is a rising star in Indian cricket.

The Tamil Nadu Premier League is famous for providing young cricketers with ample opportunities where they can showcase their talents and catch the eye of selectors.  Given the growth of the competition, scouts of various IPL teams as well as other state teams keep a tab on the tournament.

Citing the broadcast on TV and online platforms, The TNPL has also attracted a lot of fans after it was made accessible to more people.
