The Super 12 stages of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 are coming to a close as we enter the final lap of the ongoing tournament. It has been a very exciting competition so far, with many teams in contention to make it to the final four.

The Group 1 of the tournament sees New Zealand leading the points table with 5 points against their name. The likes of England and Australia are following NZ with 5 points each. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, is ranked four and still in contention to make it in the semifinals. With just one game left, here are some major upsets that can shake up the first group.

Worst possible scenarios for New Zealand

The Kiwis have been one of the best-performing teams in the T20 World Cup 2022. They are posed to make it to the semifinals and could confirm their position in the last game against Ireland. They could fail to make it in the final four if they lose to Ireland and Australia and England win their remaining group stage match. Apart from that highly likely scenario, Kane Williamson’s men will play in the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

Worst possible scenarios for England

Jos Buttler’s Men received a major shock when there suffered a narrow five-run loss to Ireland via DLS method. However, they managed to bounce back in fashion by recording a massive win over New Zealand. Currently sitting with 5 points against their name, they look decently placed to make it to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2022.

England will take on Sri Lanka in their final group-stage game of the competition. Despite being heavy favourites, to win the clash, a loss to the Asia Cup 2022 winners could impact their chances of qualification. If Buttler’s men win over Sri Lanka, they make it through.

It will be a must-win game for them as NRR could play a key factor unless Australia loses to Afghanistan. However, a loss to Sri Lanka and a heavy win for Australia against their Asian counterparts will result in a better NRR for the hosts, giving them the qualification.

Worst possible scenarios for Australia

The defending champions sit with 5 points against their name from 4 games. Their last match of the group stage sees them take on Afghanistan. It is a must-win game for them, as two points against Afghanistan will take their tally up to 7 points.

Despite winning the game, the hosts are not guaranteed a final-four spot. They will have to hope that England loses to Sri Lanka in the last fixture. If England and Australia both win, Finch’s men will have to aim at trying to win by a big margin and bettering their net run rate. If they fail to do so, Australia will be knocked out in the group stages of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

Worst possible scenarios for Sri Lanka

The Asia Cup 2022 winners played the group stages of the ICC T20 World Cup before heading into the Super 12’s. Despite starting off well with a win over the Netherlands, the back to back losses against Australia and New Zealand had a negative impact in their campaign.

Sri Lanka are still in the race to progress into the next stages of the ICC event and will have to emerge victorious in their next match vs England. Apart from the must win game, the Asian side can only make it so the semi finals if Australia loses their last match.

Ireland and Afghanistan complete the group apart from the above mentioned teams. However, both the sides have been eliminated from qualifying to the final 4 stages of the tournament. They will be aiming to cause upsets and make it difficult for the likes of New Zealand and Australia, while looking to end on a winning note.
