Shivnarine Chanderpaul Named Coach Of USA’s Women’s Teams

Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been named as the new head coach of the USA Women’s senior and U19 teams. The 47-year-old has been appointed for an period of 18 months with the appointment being confirmed by USA’s cricketer board on Sunday.

The legendary West Indies cricketer has worked as a coach before when he took charge of the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League. He also worked as a batting consultant for West Indies U19 men’s team in their recent Cricket World Cup campaign.

Currently in Orlando, Florida, Chanderpaul will kickstart his stint as new head coach of the UWSA’s u19 Women’s team when they visit the Caribbean. They are all set to take part in the upcoming Cricket West Indies Under-19 Rising Stars T20 Championship from 5 to 13 July.

Speaking about his appointment, Shivnarine Chanderpaul was quoted by ICC saying, “I am excited to have been appointed as the Head Coach of the USA National Women’s Team and Women’s Under 19 Team. The Women’s game is something I am a huge advocate of, and I have followed the progress of the USA Women’s National team with keen interest. I’ve enjoyed being involved in American cricket over the years as a resident of Orlando, so to be given this opportunity to become the Head Coach for USA Cricket is an incredible one.”

 He added, “I’m really looking forward to using my 20+ years of international cricket and my recent coaching experiences, to help the women’s teams progress to World Cups in years to come, particularly the inaugural Under 19 Cricket World Cup in January.” 

Shivnarine Chanderpaul is widely considered to be one of the best batters in the history of the game. The West Indian superstar has been a key figure in the rise of the sport in his country and often seen as a role model by many cricketers in the Caribbean. 

He has played over 164 Tests for West Indies after making his debut in 1994. The 47 year old retired in 2015 having scored 11867 runs which includes 30 centuries. Chanderpaul also made his mark in the white ball format featuring in 268 ODI matches where he registered 8778 runs while managing to score 11 centuries. He has also played in 22 T20Is amassing 343 runs in the shortest format of the game.
