Sanjay Manjrekar Said THIS About Indian Opener Shikhar Dhawan

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has voiced his opinion on Shikhar Dhawan’s comeback to the Indian team. The dashing opener returned to the ODI set up for the ongoing England series and will also be leading the Men in Blue against West Indies in the upcoming ODIs.

The former Indian cricketer recent made an appearance on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show Sports Over The Top. Manjrekar praised the prolific opening batter while speaking on the show. He also goes went on to add how the ODI format suits him (Dhawan) the best.

Sanjay Manjrekar’s comments on Shikhar Dhawan

The 57-year-old said, “Shikhar Dhawan who’s got only one format now that he can cling on but interestingly right through his career, from start to end, if you look at his performance in 50 overs cricket, it’s always been the best. This is a format that suits him best and a format where he’s been excellent.”

He also added, “I’m so glad that selectors have shown faith in him and reminded themselves that Shikhar Dhawan is still a force in 50 overs cricket. So brilliant to see them at the top.” The 36-year-old opener played very well and supported Rohit Sharma in the first ODI against England. Dhawan stitched a solid opening wicket partnership with the Indian skipper to help the Men in Blue register a massive 10 wicket win.

Manjrekar spoke on the Rohit Sharma – Shikhar Dhawan partnership and said, “I’m glad that Dhawan got this innings together. I hope he keeps on getting these kinds of innings together because Sharma will be around. He’s playing, you know, all the formats and the left-hand, right-hand combination at the top, I think it’ll be okay.”

The Delhi-based batter has worked on his fitness with the hope of being in the national team circuit. He will be focused on coming up with consistent performances with the ODI World Cup 2023 set to be played in India next year. Manjrekar has added how the player’s focus on getting fitter has helped his performance while batting.

He said, “And if you look at Dhawan’s fitness, he doesn’t look his age on the field and it’s something that he cares a lot about making sure that he’s fit and fine and just pure batting. If you look at his performance in the domestic leagues although in the T20 league, I think his batting has gone up like this, the graph has gone up with the age as well.”
