Punjab Kings To Discard Anil Kumble As Head Coach; Reports

As per reports, Indian Premier League (IPL) side Punjab Kings are rumored to be on the lookout for a new head coach with former India star Anil Kumble not expected to continue with the team. IPL franchises seem to have begun their preparations for the upcoming edition despite more than 6 months left in the tournament. 

Preparations for IPL 2023 are in full flow as Mumbai Indians had organized a 3-week players development tour to the UK earlier. Kolkata Knight Riders also made a new appointment naming Chandrakant Pandit as the head coach of the franchise. The former Madhya Pradesh Ranji team coach took the job which was vacated by Brendon McCullum as the former NZ star joined the England national Test team.

Who will be Punjab Kings new head coach?

Punjab Kings are also rumored to follow the suit and appoint a new head coach ahead of the upcoming IPL season. They are among the few franchises who have been featuring in the IPL since the inception of the tournament but are yet to lay their hands on the prestigious IPL trophy. Earlier called Kings XI Punjab, the change in name hasn’t changed their fortunes yet. The Ness-Wadia owned side has not reached the IPL playoffs since 2014 and are now eager to win their maiden title.

According to various sources, the franchise will not renew Anil Kumble’s three-year contract. The veteran star’s term with the Punjab Kings ends in September and could see him being shown the door ends next month.  It is also being reported that the likes of Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss have been approached to replace the veteran Indian spinner as the new head coach of the team.

Cricbuzz spoke with an unnamed source revealing that the franchise has also approached an Indian coach while stating the new appointment could be announced in a week’s time. The source has been quoted stating, “The Mohali team has apparently decided not to renew Anil Kumble’s three-year contract, which ends this September. They are already in search of candidates. It is learnt that their representatives have approached the likes of Eoin Morgan, Trevor Bayliss and one former India coach. Eventually one of them or none of them may get the posting. A Punjab Kings official said they will decide in a week’s time.”
