According to various reports, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is all set to launch its tender for the media rights for the upcoming new cycle. ICC is rumored to accept offers for their global broadcasting rights with cricket’s apex governing body reported to float the tender before the end of June.
The decision to delay ICC’s release was to ensure the smooth completion of Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights auction. The IPL media rights auction ended on 14th June which saw Disney Star India get the TV rights to broadcast the tournament in the Indian sub-continent with Viacom18 gaining the digital rights for the same. Times Internet claimed the media rights to broadcast IPL in US & MENA.
Earlier, Disney Star held the ICC media rights from 2015 to 2023 which saw them spend a jaw dropping $2 billion for the eight-year cycle. It was a nearly a 100% improvement from the 2007-14 cycle which was sold for $1.1 billion to a joint-venture of Disney and Fox.
The upcoming cycle could see the likes of Sony Network, Disney Star, Viacom and Zee battle it out for the rights. Unlike IPL who hosted the media rights process via an e-auction while maintaining transparency, ICC is rumored to have opted for a closed-door bidding process.

ICC is also reported to have its potential bidders prepare two separate offers for the upcoming tender with bids for 4-year rights and 8-year rights. The closed-door process will also see ICC just announce the bid winner while opting against revealing details of the unsuccessful bids. The idea behind the move is focused on closing the tender offer which ropes in nearly 70% of the games’ revenues.
ICC’s upcoming cycle will consist of two Cricket World Cups and 4 T20 World Cups and for Men’s cricket. It would also include the World Test Championship Finals alongside the Champions Trophy. Women Crickets’ T20 World Cup, alongside two Champions Trophy and Cricket World Cup tournaments will also be a part of this package deal.
Various reports reveal that ICC’s tender document would not be priced as high as the Indian Premier League which is now the second highest valued sport tournament in the world. It remains interesting to see which company walks away with the media rights for the upcoming cycle time around.
