Highest Team Score in IPL History

The Indian Premier League has seen teams shock the audience by registering astronomical scores from time to time. While amassing 200 runs in an inning isn’t something new in the modern era of T20 cricket, quite a few IPL teams have managed to breach the landmark with jaw-dropping frequency and also reach set/ chase unthinkable targets for their opponents. Currently, Royal Challengers Bangalore hold the record for scoring the highest team score in IPL history. Let’s have a look at the five highest IPL scores since the inception of this tournament in 2008.

Highest Score by IPL teams

Royal Challengers Bangalore – 263/5

This IPL clash was the one to be remembered for ages as the Gayle storm hit Pune Warriors India at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Playing on his home turf in front of a full packed crowd, Chris Gayle shattered records for fun on the fateful night of 23rd April 2013; the West Indies star propelled his way to 175*, hitting 13 fours and 17 mammoth sixes in the process to record the fastest IPL century.

In addition, AB de Villiers smoked 31 off just eight deliveries to help Royal Challengers Bangalore to 263/5, which continues to remain the highest team score in IPL history. The Pune-based side tumbled to 133/9 in their 20 overs as Gayle walked away with named Player of the Match for his record.

Royal Challengers Bangalore – 248/3

It comes as no surprise that the Bengaluru-based franchise holds the second highest team score in the Indian Premier League as well.  Royal Challengers Bangalore has had some of the fiercest batsmen in world cricket over the previous years.

Their batting wreaked havoc in IPL 2016 against the now-defunct Gujarat Lions’ side. While Gayle fell early and did not contribute much this time around, it was the former Indian captain Virat Kohli and his partner in crime AB de Villiers who treated the Bengaluru crowd with a spectacle.

Royal Challengers Bangalore thumped their way to 248/3 in 20 overs, with Kohli and de Villiers combining for a record-breaking 229-run second wicket stand.  Kohli hit five fours and eight sixes to end his innings with 109 off 55 balls against his name, while de Villiers remained not out on 129* off 55 balls. The South African was named the Man of the Match, with RCB winning the game after restricting Gujarat Lions to 104 from 18.4 overs.

Chennai Super Kings – 246/5

One of the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings also finds themselves on the list of registering the highest total in the tournament. The incident took place back during IPL 2010 when CSK rode on Murli Vijay’s brilliance at MA Chidambaram Stadium. The opener scored a breathtaking 127 to help his side amass a total of 246/5 against Rajasthan Royals to record the third-highest score in IPL.

While other high-scoring matches were typically one-sided, this clash went down to the wire, with Naman Ojha’s antic coming to the Royals’ rescuer. Ojha scorched his way to a 55-ball 94, with Watson also coming out all guns blazing to score a 25-ball 60. In the end, Rajasthan Royals ended up losing the fixture by 22 runs. With both the teams crossing the 200-run mark with ease, this clash remains to be amongst the highest-scoring matches in IPL history.

Kolkata Knight Riders – 245/6

Fans were treated to a run fest during IPL 2018 when the Kolkata Knight Riders took on their Punjab-based rivals. Both of the teams did not boast a solid bowling attack which saw the batters relish the opportunity and score runs aplenty.

Batting first, the men in purple smashed 245/6, riding on Sunil Narine’s 75 from just 36 balls. Punjab tried to chase down the colossal target but ended up managing only 214/8. Narine proved to be too hot to handle for the Punjab-based team on the day.

Chennai Super Kings – 240/5

Chennai Super Kings made a statement in the first edition of the Indian Premier League by boosting the ability to accumulate runs on will. They were on a hot streak during IPL 2008 and announced themselves to be one of the toughest sides to beat in the competition in the second match of IPL 2008

With a solid combination of aggressive batsmen raced upto 240/5 in their 20 overs in a inning which saw Michael Hussey smash 116 off just 54 balls laced while Suresh Raina and S Badrinath got the team to the fifth-highest team score in IPL. Punjab managed to score muster 207/4 riding on James Hopes’ 71 off 33 balls but eventually ended up losing the game, with Hussey walking away with the Player of the Match award.
