Cricket South Africa (CSA) had earlier announced the launch of their new T20 league and have now invited various Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises to bid for the teams. They also have called upon various interested parties to prepare their offers while appointing Deloitte & Touche, to assess the potential bids. The initial deadline for making bids was July 11 which has now been delayed by 2 days on the requests of interested participants.
As per reports, various IPL teams such as Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals are said to have presented an expression of interest (EOI). Former South African born English cricketer Kevin Pietersen has also expressed interest, taking the tally up to 29 EoIs. It includes attention from some Pakistan Super League (PSL) teams too.

Cricbuzz has quoted a CSA official stating that the new owners of teams will be announced at the end of July. It is also being reported that CVC Capitals, a private equity firm that owns IPL outfit Gujarat Titans (GT), has shown great interest and is likely to make a bid for a team in the upcoming South African T20 league. There also been interest from investors of Global League T20 2017.
Cricket South Africa has not confirmed the number of teams that will be a part of this upcoming T20 league. However, it is believed that the tournament will have six franchises with 4 teams up for bidding while two teams being reserved for South African bidders.
Reports further add how CSA is looking to bridge the gap between the best (IPL) and the second-best T20 league. A CSA stated document is said to contain the following quote. “There is a clear gap between the best (IPL) and the 2nd best league. CSA should therefore focus on the opportunity to create the 2nd best T20 league in the World,.”
The South African cricket board has also shared that there is no base price that any potential bidder will have to match with the team allotment set to be done after a complete assessment of the bids. It is also being said that the upcoming South African T20 league is set to take place in January-February. The rumored dates coincide with various other T20 tournament which includes the likes of T20 of Emirates Cricket Board (ECB).
