From a country which is known as father’s land, we present to you an exquisite game. German Rummy or Rommé is one of the most popular card games played across the globe. It is played using two standard card decks and four jokers and is played between 2-6 players only. 

Objective

In any rummy game, the ultimate goal is to meld cards and in German Rummy players have to get their cards into sets or runs and eventually meld them.

Dealing

Every player is dealt with 13 cards and the remaining cards are kept in the draw pile. Before the game begins, the dealer flips one card from the draw pile and places it on the top.

Gameplay

Each player is expected to draw cards, meld, and discard them. This variation of rummy has two types of melds, namely, sets and runs. A set is formed when three cards of the same rank are grouped. For example, J-J-J is a set. A run is similar to straight flush in poker. For example, 3-4-5-6 of hearts is considered to be a run.

Use of Joker cards

Jokers are used to swap cards. In case a player has played his/her first meld can swap cards with a joker card. For example, if a player has a run of 4-5-Joker-7, and the player has a 6 spade, can swap that card with a Joker card. This Joker card should be used in a new meld as players are not allowed to keep the card with them.

Scoring

The game gets over when at least one player empties their hand. The winning player earns equal points as compared to the value of their melded cards. The points for other players are calculated based on the difference between melded cards and the remaining cards. The King, Queen and Jack cards carry 10 points, number cards 10-2 carry the value of the card. The Ace card has two values, when used as a high card it is considered as one point while when it is used as the low card, it is 11 points. Joker card has points equal to the card that it is replaced with. If the Joker card is in the hand till the end then 30 points are allotted to the player.
