Top Rummy News Round Up Of 2020

The year 2020 proved to be a topsy-turvy year for everyone. But despite the many highs and lows, the rummy industry is still standing strong. One could even say that the COVID-19 lockdown gave a boost to the industry. With the new year soon approaching, lets look back at how online rummy fared in 2020.

Lockdown and Cheap Data

When the country went into lockdown at the start of the year, it unfortunately shutdown many businesses. But while the pandemic was hitting the economy hard, there were other sectors that benefited greatly, one among which was the online gaming industry. With people now confined to their houses, many turned to the internet for comfort. Online real-money games like rummy saw a huge spike in the number of users in the first phase of the lockdown i.e., March – May. Along with this, the availability of cheap internet data and smartphones further increased the demand of the game.

The Rummy Federation Gets A New Name

The Rummy Federation (TRF) changed their corporate name to The Online Rummy Federation (TORF) on 21 June, 2020. The decision was made to keep up with the rummy’s rising online popularity. The organization is a self-regulatory body for the online rummy industry. Their objectives are to develop and promote online rummy, while also ensuring that online rummy operators are following the standards and guidelines that will promote a healthy environment for gaming.

Tamil Nadu Bans Online Gaming

One of the biggest news in the industry was Tamil Nadu’s ban on online gaming. The ban meant that anyone involved in online real-money gaming could now be fined and imprisoned for up to two years. With Tamil Nadu being one of the many states which has a high percentage of online rummy users. This came as a huge blow to the industry. Even though it is a blanket ban on online gaming, it’s the rummy industry that was affected more than any other. Even requests made by online gaming company Junglee Games for an interim stay were also denied, check the full story here.

Technology To The Rescue

One of the many measures which the rummy industry took to safeguard their players, was the introduction of advance technologies into various platforms. In a recent call for regulation, TORF made their support for player protection very clear. Technologies like advanced data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence were initiated to deal with growing concerns around the growth of irresponsible gaming in India. Games24x7, the company behind RummyCircle, an online gaming platform, tied up with third parties. These parties specialized in optical character recognition (OCR) technology to automatically verify users KYC documents and to eliminate human errors. Companies also offered their users self-exclusion features which allows players to temporarily block their accounts.

Much has happened in the rummy industry this past year. Despite the tumultuous year, many companies sailed through without much distress.
