Tamil Nadu: Online Rummy To Be Banned?

On Monday, the Tamil Nadu cabinet discussed a report that was submitted by the Justice Chandru committee which called for a ban on online rummy. As per media reports, a majority of the cabinet is in favour of banning online rummy in the state. More details regarding the decision taken by the cabinet will be shared by Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Tuesday stated news reports.

Previously, the government had passed the Tamil Nadu Gaming and Police Laws (Amendment) Act of 2021 which banned online games played with stakes like online rummy and poker. However, the companies which offered such games approached the Madras High Court, and the ban was soon lifted.

On 10th June, the state government announced that an Ordinance will be put in place based on the recommendations of the committee. As per news reports, a ban on online rummy has been demanded by various political parties and while the core of the matter is mentioned to be only rummy, the law is expected to cover all online games for stakes.

The 71-page report argued that no skill was required to play any of the online games and that they inevitably make players addicted to them, making them indebted to the company. The report also states that there is no question about regulating the game as it was impossible to do so.

This Ordinance would be a model for other states in the country, stated Secretary to the Government (Legal Affairs) B Karthikeyan. Additional Director-General of Police, Vinit Dev Wankhede, psychiatrist, and founder of NGO Sneha Lakshmi Vijayakumar, and Professor S Sankararaman of IIT-M were some members of the committee.
