Rummy Variation – Dummy Rummy

Rummy is a group of matching-card games notable for similar gameplay based on matching cards of the same rank or sequence and same suit. The basic goal is to build melds which consist of sets, three or four of a kind of the same rank, three or more cards in sequence, of the same suit. This time we have Dummy Rummy in store for you. This type of Rummy is a fun variant played among two to four players with two standard decks of cards, including four jokers, for a total of 108 cards.

METHOD

To begin with, each player is dealt thirteen cards. During each hand, the objective is to complete the appointed run and kinds, and get rid of as many cards as possible. The goal of each player should be to get rid of all the cards in the hand by forming sequences and sets. When a player gets rid of all the cards, the penalty scores of the losing players are calculated based on the remaining cards in their hand. The player who has the least points after playing all the twelve hands wins the game.

A Dummy Rummy game begins from the player on the left of the dealer. Players need to draw a card from the discard pile and discard one of their cards during each turn. The game goes on until a player is able to get rid of all the cards from the hand by forming sequences and or sets. Card No. 2 and Jokers can be used to replace any other card to form sequences and sets.

DUMMY RUMMY HANDS

There are twelve melds that each player has to form to complete the game. The list of the hands are given below:
  1. 2- 3 of a kind
  2. 3 a kind, and 1- run of four
  3. 2-4 of a kind
  4. 2- runs of 4
  5. 1- 4 of a kind, and 1- run of 4
  6. 2- 3 of a kind, and 1- run of 4
  7. 1- 3 of a kind, and 1- run of 7
  8. 3- 3 of a kind
  9. 2- 5 of a kind
  10. 2- runs of 5
  11. 8 of a kind
  12. run of 10

Finally, during each player’s turn they are supposed to discard one card onto the discard pile. The objective is to discard all of one’s cards, and the play continues until one player manages to get rid of all the cards from their hand by discarding. When discarding, a player may not discard a card if it creates a meld, (run or a set).
