Rummy Variation – 27 Card Rummy

Of all the card games played in India, rummy is one of the most popular one. If you are new to this game, you must learn all the possible variations. This time, let’s learn the variation called ‘27 Card Rummy.’ This variant is played between 2 to 5 players with three card decks. The game also makes use of 2 up and 2 down joker cards apart from the printed and wildcard ones.

Upper Joker:

The card which is placed right above the wild card joker and is of the same suit as the wild card joker.

Lower Joker:

This one is the opposite of the upper joker. This card is placed below the wild card.

27 Card Rummy Rules:

According to the rules of this game, a player has to declare at least three pure sequences. Other than these pure sequences, the rest of the cards can be arranged in sets or sequences. A pure sequence is called a ‘Tunnela’ or London which is formed by three or more cards of the same suit and same rank. In this game, three printed jokers can also form a ‘Tunnela.’ During a showdown, a valid declaration can only be formed by making at least three ‘Tunnelas.’

You can also form a ‘Dublee,’ which is a pair of two identical cards. One can also form a ‘Dublee’ with the help of two printed joker cards. If a player is not able to make three ‘Tunnelas,’ then they can make 10 ‘Dublees’ and arrange them in individual groups. If a player is not able to form either of the two then he/she can form a group of 10 joker cards. During a showdown, one can arrange the joker cards in a group as well.

Points System

If all the cards are arranged in valid sets, then the player loses two points and if the player makes sequences, then creating three are mandatory. With respect to ‘Dublees’ if a player groups six or more ‘Dublees’ then the player loses two points. There is also a rule for joker cards. If jokers are grouped together without the presence of other cards, then the player loses two points for that as well.
