Kerala MLA Shames Actors In Rummy Advertisements

As per news reports, Kerala Culture Minister V.N. Vasan said in the Assembly on Tuesday that the government will discourage celebrities from becoming brand ambassadors of online betting and rummy portals. Vasan was responding to a demand made by MLA K.B Ganesh Kumar, who had raised concerns about the increasing number of suicides by people who suffered financial losses while playing online rummy.

Kumar also reportedly blamed influential personalities from the entertainment and sports industry like Shah Rukh Khan, Virat Kohli, Vijay Yesudas among others for appearing in advertisements of online gaming. Kumar added, “While famous personalities such as Virat Kohli and Shah Rukh Khan have lent their stardom to boosting the business of emerging apps, we have witnessed artists like Vijay Yesudas, and Rimi Tony follow suit without understanding the detrimental effect of such platforms.”

Vasan while responding to Kumar’s demand said that the government cannot legally ban famous personalities from featuring in the advertisements but they could put in a request to avoid being associated with online rummy brands and by extension their respective advertisements. He added, “We can only seek their support towards such efforts to sensitize the public against such applications. Changes can only happen when a cultural revolution occurs in influential personalities’ minds.”
