Card game rummy has been one of the most favoured games in India. With the association of it to mythology and festivities, Rummy holds a huge place in our culture. Mumbai’s well-known Islam Gymkhana, a popular sports hub and centre for socio-cultural activities, finds its members in discord with the club’s president Yusuf Abrahni after he banned rummy and other card games on its premises.
The club’s president claimed that some of its members were indulging in gambling while playing rummy and closed the card room on Friday, which was Eid-e-Milad or Prophet Muhammad’s birth anniversary. Many members were unhappy with the decision and accused Abrahni of changing the ‘liberal’ nature of the gymkhana by turning it into a ‘madrassa’. A member of the gymkhana, Ishtiaq Ali said, “It is a club not a madrassa. He should not play the religion card. “If Abrahni knew that some members gambled at the Gymkhana, why didn’t he lodge a complaint?”
The former Congress MLA defended himself by explaining that the gymkhana had always encouraged all kinds of sports and games, but that there were some members who gambled under the guise of playing rummy. Their records showed that there were five guests for one member in the cards room.
Additionally, on the claims of mixing religion, Abrahni defended himself by saying, “Ever since I took over as president last year, we have added over a dozen games, including tennis, badminton, volleyball, a women’s recreation section, a state-of-the-art gym, jacuzzi, steam bath, sauna bath and spa. Those who say I have turned it into a madrassa should explain which madrassa has spa and steam bath facilities,” He also added that a new swimming pool was in the making and that its multi-purpose turfs hosts a range of football, volleyball and cricket matches.
The decision was met with mostly negative reviews from its members since the ban stopped even the senior members from playing cards, which they believed sent out a flawed message to people. Accounting for the fact that many non-Muslims were also members of the gymkhana. For the latest news about rummy, keep reading GutshotMagazine.com
