Indian Rummy Variants You Must Play

Many a summer holidays went into playing card games back in the day. There was rummy, teen patti or some other variant created within a household. And the variants perhaps ended there.

Today a number of variants have cropped up. New versions are being adopted, borrowed, adapted and freshly devised to satisfy the market’s demand for thrilling card games. But a majority of us are unaware of the different versions of the game available or their popularity in India.

Traditional Rummy

The game of rummy we usually play is called the traditional rummy. It is well over 200 hundred years old and played with a table of 2 or 6. Each player is served a deal of 13 cards each. As you already know, whoever forms the required sequences first, wins.

Rummy 500

Also known as Pinochle rummy or 500 Rum or Persian rummy. This game is played with either 3, 4 or 5 players. Each player receives a deal of 7 cards and the remaining cards become the stock pile. Here, unlike the traditional rummy, the score of a player is equivalent to the value of the sets they meld. As the name would suggest, in order to win a match, one has to reach a score of 500 points cumulatively.

 Points Rummy

This is probably the most popular variant in the online rummy circle! It would require a table of 2 or 6. Each point in this game has a value in rupee terms decided well before the game begins. The game is played with 2 decks of cards and the aim is to form sets and sequences. A single player would be the recipient of the cash at the end of a match. This game is quite quick compared to the other versions and hence the reason for its popularity. The maximum score a player can achieve in a single game is no more than 80 points.

Top 5 Reasons to Learn Rummy Variations

Pool Rummy

You will find some similarities with Points rummy here. Because it follows the same pattern here where you are required to meld your cards into sets and sequences. But what will stir you up is the elimination concept. A player is bound to get knocked out once their cumulative points become equivalent to a predefined pool which can be either 101 or 201. The game can go on for multiple rounds. This is the test match version of rummy. And whoever survives till the end, will be declared as the winner.

Deals Rummy

If you are one of those people fascinated by those colorful chips in casinos as shown in movies, this might be the game for you. The game begins with each player being distributed an equal number of chips. Before the match marathon begins, the players decide upon a fixed number of deals. Every time a winner wins a deal, he becomes the owner of the chips of those who lose. So it’s a no brainer that whoever ends up with the most chips in the end becomes the winner.

This line-up is just the tip of the iceberg. Many variants are being invented and international favorites are being adapted to satisfy the local market’s craving for new versions of the online card game. Alongside the actual games, many sites are also offering practice games so newbies would not find a new variant challenging in real time. Sounds exciting right? Which game are you likely going to play with your buddies next time?
