Gambling RAID In Chennai; 19 Arrested In Bust

A lodge in Sarojini Street, T. Nagar was raided and 19 men were nabbed for playing cards. The Mambalam police arrested the 19 men and seized INR 1.36 Lakh. As per the latest news reports, the police found that these men were involved in betting. Among the 19 arrested, Gowtham, Ansari, Srinivasan, and Joseph were arrested and later released on station bail. The recent updates state how a ban was imposed on online gambling in Tamil Nadu. The state made online gambling a criminal offense due to an increased number of reports of deaths and suicide-related to gambling in Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas of Pondicherry.

The Madras High Court refused to stay the operation of the ordinance promoted by the state government of Tamil Nadu on banning online betting games. The stay was sought when gaming website/application Junglee Games requested the Tamil Nadu government to stall the procedure of imposing a ban on virtual games that involved betting.

The plea came up for hearing and senior advocate P S Raman represented the petitioner mentioning that the company, Junglee Games has been running a legitimate business in the country. Raman added, “When the game is legitimate in other parts of the country, it cannot be banned as illegitimate in Tamil Nadu. Since 1968, the Supreme Court made it clear that rummy is a game of skill and not a game of chance and hence, rummy cannot be banned”

Another advocate that commented about the same issue mentioned that when rummy is allowed to be played physically in clubs, the same cannot be banned online. Playing rummy cannot be considered as betting. As per news reports, the state government refused the interim relief on the plea moved by Junglee, a division bench of Justice R Subbiah and Justice C Saravanan have directed the state to file its response by 21 December.
