Financial Scam Surfaces After Tamil Nadu Man Commits Suicide

In Tamil Nadu, a contract employee of ISRO named VH Vineeth committed suicide after accumulating a debt of INR 21 Lakh. It was reported that Vineeth took a loan through a mobile app to play online rummy and before that he had borrowed money from his friends as well. When the debt was not repaid, the company that loaned him the money started contacting his friends and colleagues.

In addition to this, the company also sent insulting messages to them along with a picture of Vineeth. This greatly impacted him and caused him to take his own life. Vineeth’s brother confirmed that the lending company had approached him at his home as well.

Even with Tamil Nadu’s ban on online gambling, reports of people taking loans with illegal interest rates through mobile apps have surfaced. These mobile apps are used to play cyber games like online rummy and make it easier for players to play through credit if they do not have access to cash at that moment. These kinds of loans are available instantly for daily interest rates and players can immediately take another loan if they run out of money.

According to the government of Tamil Nadu, the ban of online gambling was put in place due to the adverse effect it had on the youth. It stated that online gambling was affecting the minds of young people and lead them to become addicted to gambling. The state revealed that many youths were committing suicide due to gambling debts that they were unable to repay.

The Indian online gaming industry grew tremendously during the lockdown with thousands of players registering to various sites. Due to this, iGaming operators have been keeping a close watch on the industry. But the rise of gambling related deaths caused anti-gambling campaigners to file various PILs, which hurt the iGaming market greatly. It has also caused states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to ban online gaming. Now, Kerala could also reportedly follow the steps of these states and impose the ban as well.

Many people against the ban, reasoned that it would only drive out legal operators in the state which would then drive players to illegal operations. Furthermore, many argue that card games like rummy are skilled based and thus should not be included.
