Resolution Against Online Rummy To Be Passed On Independence Day?

PMK President and Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss has urged village panchayats to pass a resolution to ban online rummy and alcohol in the gram sabha meeting that will be held on Independence Day. The government of Tamil Nadu sought public opinion on the proposed gaming ban.

Ramadoss took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the matter. The Twitter thread explained that liquor and online gambling were ‘two of the biggest problems that plague Tamil Nadu.’ In the last tweet of the thread, Ramadoss urged for a resolution to be passed in the gram sabha meeting that is scheduled to take place on 15th August.

The Tamil Nadu state government has directed village panchayats to ensure that people participate in the gram sabha meeting in sufficient numbers. This is also the first gram sabha meeting after the state government increased the allocation for gram sabha from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 per meeting. As per the rules of the Tamil Nadu government, gram sabhas are required to meet four times a year, including on Independence Day and Republic Day.

Ramadoss on Twitter said, “Online rummy and liquor are the two major evils in the State. In the last one year, 28 persons have died of online rummy and more than two lakh lives are taken by liquor every year. To make the sounds of people louder, resolutions against online rummy and liquor should be passed in the grama sabha meetings and a large number of PMK men should participate in the grama sabha meetings.”

The former union health minister noted that as the village panchayats are at the grassroots of democracy, they will be able to take the demands of the public to the government via the gram sabha meetings.

Recently, the self-regulatory gaming body, All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), has appealed to the government of Tamil Nadu to not approve the proposed ordinance. AIGF stated that a complete ban on online skill-based games has been held to be arbitrary, illegal, and unconstitutional by the Honourable Madras High Court in a judgement of a division bench of the court on 3rd August 2021 in Junglee Games India Private Limited v. State of Tamil Nadu and Others.
