Goa CM To Take Action Against Online Rummy Apps. Is Poker Next?

Goa’s Chief Minister (CM) Pramod Sawant has announced that he will take action against online rummy platforms operating in the state. During a Zero Hour at the ongoing monsoon session of the state assembly, Congress MLA Sankalp Amonkar, who represents the Mormugao constituency, raised a query, to which Sawant responded. 

Amonkar claimed that online gambling is dangerous for youth. He said, “Many governments have banned it and hence, the Goa government should also ban online rummy Circle gaming.” He further added, “Rummy, three cards, poker, etc. are dangerous. These are easily accessible to youth. They are addicted to these games. Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Orissa, and Nagaland have banned online gambling.”

The Congress MLA also added that these online games that involve stakes have students betting large sums of money, which is a worrisome matter for the state. To support his case, he mentioned an example of one of his friends, who ended up losing ₹5 Lakh in the past three months in these online gaming apps.

Amonkar said, “One can start playing these games at ₹5 to a range of ₹10,000. Even one can extend the limit above ₹40,000 per day. It is a complete scam. The government is not monitoring it.” Responding to Amonkar’s query, Sawant said, “I will take action on it.” 

About a year ago, the Kerala High Court lifted the ban imposed by the state government which prohibited online games in the state. However, the state government of Kerala is once again contemplating an amendment proposal to impose a total ban on online rummy. Kerala state government believes online gaming sites are the reason behind several suicides in the state and wants to ban it completely.

It is to be noted that Goa is the second largest casino operating state in the country. The state has about six offshore casinos, operating on the Mandovi river in Panaji. It also houses nine onshore casinos operating from five-star resorts across the state’s coastline. The casino industry has seen a spike and has managed to increase the tourist traffic in the state by four times since the pandemic-induced lockdowns were lifted.
