Online Rummy Growing Among Fisherfolk In Visakhapatnam Despite Ban

A 61-day annual fishing ban topped with the 18-hour partial curfew has paved a way for the young fishermen community in Visakhapatnam to indulge in online rummy to make some money in a short span of time. The game is currently banned in the state, however, the youth are playing the game to make money.

The trend of playing online rummy has been on the rise among youngsters belonging to the fishermen communities in Payakaraopeta, Nakkapalli, S Rayavaram and Rambilli mandals. Some of these players are falling into a debt trap while some are playing it just to fund their other addictions. Fishing is the primary occupation of these people and the annual fishing ban has stopped all the fishing activities leaving very less options for the fishermen in terms of earning money.

The government of Andhra Pradesh has banned the online rummy game in the state, however, the youth install false GPS location apps to play the game with the intent of making money. Some of the youth are falling into depression after losing tons of money in the online game, while some are indulging in it only to fund their addictions. 

V Chakradhar, Senior Inspector, S Rayavaram police station says, “Some of the gamblers form groups and even check into a lodge to play online rummy. Most of them now are debt-ridden and have become clueless about their future.”

The gamers have become proactive because of the 61-days annual fishing ban as well as the partial curfew due to COVID-19. These players are thronging nearby parks, gardens, village outskirts and lodges to play online rummy.

The police are currently engaged in managing their curfews duties and hence these players get a chance to indulge in the banned game without any fear. S Vijay Kumar, Circle Inspector, Nakkapalli says, “Earlier, we used to book a number of cases against those playing online rummy. Based on reliable information, we caught hold of many gamblers. It is difficult to catch hold of them as they appear as if they were watching a movie. Soon, we will be raiding the places again.”

The police said that they have conducted raids at many and seized several mobile phones. However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, they are not able to conduct raids like before.The fishermen colonies will be monitored like before stated the news reports.
