A rummy game is fun to play and one of the widely played card games in India. For any card game, the terms used are very important as they are an integral part of the game. If you are a newbie and want to learn this game, we suggest you also get familiar with the rummy terms. Here’s a list of terms that you should know of.

Dealer: This isn’t like poker. There will be no dealer button to indicate who the dealer is. In rummy, every player is expected to draw a card from the deck of cards, and the player who picks the least ranked card is considered to be the dealer. The dealer then deals the cards during that particular game. In some games, this rule of choosing a dealer is tweaked and the person who loses is asked to deal.

Declare: This rummy term indicates that a player has finished arranging their cards in sets or/and sequences. In a traditional 13 card rummy game, players are expected to declare by putting the 14th card face down on the discard pile.

Draw Pile: The draw pile is the opposite of a discard pile. In a typical rummy game, cards that are left after distribution to all the players are kept face down for the players to draw cards.

Joker cards: Joker cards are essential for any rummy game. There are two types of Joker cards that are used.

Joker – A joker card is randomly selected at the start of every game. This card can be used to replace any card in the game. 

Printed Joker – There are 52 cards in a standard deck of cards. Other than those, there are two to three printed joker cards. A printed joker card is also known as a wildcard.

Sequence – A sequence is formed using three or four consecutive cards of the same suit. For example, 6-7-8 of the same suit would make one pure sequence. While a pure sequence is a sequence without a joker card.
