Implications Of Playing Rummy In A State Where It Is Illegal

The rummy industry has been making some incredible strides. At the same time, the legal issues regarding playing rummy are also being talked of. Occasionally, the situation seems stormy, and a ban seems imminent. But again, things pipe down, and rummy seems to look up. The industry has been rife with these swings since online rummy first acquired popularity a decade ago.

The tremendous growth and investments might easily make one believe that everything is smooth. The industry, especially in a few states continues to be on tenterhooks. Here’s a look at the implications of playing rummy in a State where it is illegal.

Bans continue in various states – is it possible to play?

Andhra Pradesh banned rummy in 2021 and Telangana, since 2017. Andhra Pradesh was one of the states which was pulling close to 30% of revenue for the rummy industry. The ban hit the industry badly, and many devoted rummy players were left without their favorite game.

Implications of overriding the ban

There have been sporadic incidents of people attempting to play in spite of the ban, but the story didn’t quite end well for them. Both, players and organizers would have to incur heavy penalties in such a case. Apart from a penalty, the organizers would have to face a jail time for a year even if it’s just a first-time offence. And if they are caught repeating the offence for a second time, they would be imprisoned for two years along with a fine. As for the players, they will be jailed for six months. It is better to avoid the game in such a situation than risk it.

Similar stories echo in other States

In Telangana, the state government passed the Telangana Gaming (Amendment) bill, 2017. And online rummy was added to this list in 2018. This was followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Despite the bans, press reports from these states report incidences of people overriding website restrictions using proxies and VPNs. If all parties can reach a middle ground, then extreme moves like a ban may not be needed. The Online Rummy Federation of India is at the forefront trying to establish international standards and practices in the country and eventually, create a healthy playing environment. If such a status quo can be accomplished, then online rummy can prove to be a great revenue generating industry.
