Indeed one of the finest hunts in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2023 auction, Swapnil Singh, has shocked every cricketing fan out there. Yes, with a base price of ₹2 Lakh, the bowling all-rounder had managed to grab a ₹12 Lakh contract from Madurai Panthers. The star has only ever played for Siechem Madurai Panthers in his entire TNPL career.

He achieved impressive bowling figures of 6 for 91, the second-best in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, which led to him being bought by Kings XI Punjab for ₹10 Lakh at the 2016 auction. Before this, he was also part of the Mumbai Indians squad but had not yet been given the opportunity to play in the IPL.

Who Is Swapnil Singh?

Swapnil Singh is an Indian cricketer who has been in and around Indian cricket from a long time now. He was picked up by the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) team Siechem Madurai Panthers. Singh played a vital role in the team’s campaign and was even named the player of the match in one of the games. His impressive performances in the TNPL caught the attention of the Tamil Nadu selectors, and he was picked up for the state team’s T20 squad. Soon, he debuted for Tamil Nadu in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Swapnil’s consistent performances in domestic cricket earned him a spot in the TNPL 2024 squad as well. The right-handed bowler is still at the beginning of his cricketing journey and has a long way to go. Swapnil Singh has only played three matches in IPL 2024 but is already having his best IPL season to date. While the star has played in the Indian Premier League before, he had played just two games, bowling two overs and conceding 18 runs without picking up a wicket. The state of his batting was somewhat similar. He had faced just four balls and made two runs before IPL 2024.

In IPL 2024, however, Royal Challengers Bangalore decided to take a punt on Swapnil Singh and it has paid off. The bowling all-rounder has played three games in IPL 2024 already and has managed to pick up three wickets. He has gotten more time with the bat as well and has scored 27 runs in three matches for RCB, with his best score being 15 not out.

Swapnil Singh made his IPL debut for Lucknow Super Giants in 2023. His first game came against Gujarat Titans. He bowled one over, conceding seven runs and contributed two runs with the bat in that game. His second game was a playoff game against Mumbai Indians. He bowled just one over and conceded 11 runs but his team Lucknow Super Giants knocked out his former team Mumbai Indians in that match.

While we are just starting to year about Swapnil Singh, it does not mean that he is a young superstar breaking through the ranks. In fact, Swapnil Singh is 33 years old. However, that does not mean he is at the end of his career. Cricketers have played till their 40s in the Indian Premier League and if Swapnil Singh can break into the first team of an IPL squad next year he can have quite a good and long career in the Indian Premier League.
