On this day, 11 years ago, Indian cricket saw the arrival of one of its greatest ever players in the longest format of the game as Virat Kohli made his test debut on 20th June. The Indian middle order batter got his first taste of Test cricket when he took to the pitch against the West Indies.
Kohli made his debut at Kingston in Jamaica as the right-handed batsman walked in to bat at number 5 for the Indian team. He did not have a flying start to his test career after being sent back to the just scoring just 4 runs by Fidel Edwards. Things got a little better in his first Test as Kohli ended up managing to add 15 more runs to his tally in the second innings.

However, he ended up giving his wicket away to Edwards once again with Carlton Baugh completing the catch on both the occasions. Despite scoring only 19 runs in the first game, Kohli managed to have a solid impact on the field for India as he took 2 catches, helping his side send Ramnaresh Sarwan and Baugh back in the hut.

Since his debut, Kohli has gone on to be one of the best batters in the longest format of the game. The former India captain has struck the hearts of cricket fans giving them a ton of memories with his performances with the bat as well as while leading the team, clinching victories on foreign tours.
India became one of the best Test playing sides in the world under Kohli when he took charge of the team back in 2014. He led his team to the number one Test cricket ranking in 2017 and established authority across the world in the longest format of the game. India also never lost a single Test series on home turf under Kohli with the batter turning home conditions into a solid fortress.
One of his key achievements as captain of the Test team was leading the country to a series win in Australia for the first time back in 2018-19. He redefined Test cricket getting people engrossed in red-ball once again while ending up as one of India’s most successful captain winning 40 Tests in 68 games.
After handing over the captaincy, Kohli is currently a part of the Indian team which is in London preparing for a one-off Test match against England. He will be eager to get going and help India win a Test series win in England for the first time since 2007 under Rohit Sharma.
