Graeme Swann has come out to defend Indian star Virat Kohli, who had a torrid time with the bat in the ongoing one-off Test match against England. The 33-year-old was dismissed in the final session of the day 3 at Edgbaston. He received a lot of criticism by Indian commentators after he was sent back to the hut by an unplayable delivery from Ben Stokes.
The former spinner came to Kohli’s rescue saying how the delivery bowled by Stokes was unplayable. He went on to add that the delivery could have taken the wicket away of any batter in Test cricket. The Englishman also spoke how no batter had a chance to see that kind of ball off and coined it to be a “ripsnorter” delivery.
Swann said while speaking on Sony Sports, “You can say what you want, I don’t care who is batting in any period of Test history. If you can survive that delivery you are very, very lucky. That is unplayable. It’s a lucky catch in the end.”

He added, “Regardless, if you are looking to get on the front foot, back foot, that ball is a ripsnorter. From an English point of view, I often find that whenever Indian commentators talk about Virat, I always think ‘wow they are quite harsh on him’. The standards are so high for Virat, I thought he was very at ease today.”
Former Indian seamer Zaheer Khan also spoke on the England skipper and was seen lauding Stokes for his excellent performances with the ball on Day 3 of the Test match. He was quoted by Cricbuzz saying, “Ben Stokes bowled a brilliant spell and it was not easy to bat against him. Had India lost a couple of more wickets, things could have been different and there could have been greater pressure on them.”
Kohli looked great and batted with intent during his stay on the crease. The 33 year old also hit his signature cover drive and was looking good to get a strong score. However, the extra bounce from from Stokes did the trick as the ball took the outside edge of bat. England wicket keeper Sam Billings could not catch the ball as Joe Root showed a good presence of mind to sent Kohli back. After his dismissal, the Indian batter was mocked by the English fans for his incident with Jonny Bairstow.
