Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has gone on to praise Suryakumar Yadav for recent outings against the West Indies. The 31-year-old finds himself as the top-ranked Indian batter in the shortest format of the game which sees Ponting raise comparisons between him and former South African star AB de Villiers.
Yadav has been in great touch since the turn of the year, especially in the T20I format. The middle order batter has gone on to score 428 runs in 12 innings, registering an average of 38.90 while hitting the ball at a jaw dropping strike rate of 189.38.
Amongst those innings, Yadav has recorded two half centuries and one century which sees him slot at the second position on the ICC T20I rankings. The 31 year old has played in various positions and roles for the Men in Blue, be it while opening the batting or finishing the innings.
Ricky Ponting brings up similarities between Suryakumar Yadav and AB de Villiers while speaking about the 31-year old’s ability to play across the ground. The former Aussie cricketer went on to add how the Mumbaikar possesses a variety of shots while revealing how playing on the leg side is one of Yadav’s biggest strengths.
Ponting was quoted by Times of India saying, “Suryakumar Yadav scores 360 degrees around the ground, a bit like AB de Villiers did when he was in his actual prime. The lap shots, the late cuts, you know, the ramps over the keeper’s head. He can hit down the ground. He hits really well over the leg side, flicks to deep backward square particularly well, and he’s a good player of fast bowling and is a good player of spin bowling. He’s a very, very exciting player and I’m sure someone that’s going to find himself in their team, not just their squad.”

The 47 year old World Cup winner also shared his thoughts on the Indian star’s best position. He revealed how Yadav should bat at four for the Men in Blue. He also claimed that despite the 31-year-old’s destructiveness with the bat in the final overs could see him walk in at 4, Yadav could also open the innings if needed.
Ponting added, “For Suryakumar Yadav, it’s one, two or four. I think he can open, but I think he’s probably, you know, if you could probably just keep him away from the new ball, let him control the middle part of the game outside the Powerplay, through in the middle, and if he’s in at the end, you know what can happen. I think number four is his best spot.”
