Rashid Khan has shared his thoughts on the Afghanistan team and claimed that young players’ enjoyment of playing T20Is is making a big difference in the ongoing continental tournament. The Afghanistan cricket team kickstarted their Asia Cup 2022 on 27th August where they took on Sri Lanka. They went on to record a massive eight-wicket win over their counterparts in the Asia Cup opener and sent a strong statement of intent to other teams with a solid performance.
Rashid Khan, who is considered to be one of the best players in the shortest format of the game spoke to the media ahead of his teams’ clash against Bangladesh on Tuesday. The Afghanistan spinner feels that the side which manages to handle the pressure better will end up winning the game while also stressing how well his team has prepared for this 6-nation competition.
ESPNCricinfo has quoted the 23-year-old spinner saying, “We have more youngsters now than before. Most of the guys enjoy this short format. We are playing in Sharjah after a long time, but at the same time, our cricket remains the same. We know our roles.”
“We are playing Bangladesh away for the first time since Dehradun, so it has been four years. At the same time, whoever plays better cricket and controls their nerves in the big game, they will do the best. As a team, we will prepare well and go with a fresh mind and enjoy the cricket,” Rashid Khan added.
The spinner also went on to claim how the capped and uncapped Afghanistan players have good experience from playing a lot of franchise T20 cricket in the recent past. Rashid Khan shared how Afghan cricketers are in high demand in most of the leagues and that the franchise exposure makes up for the lack of international cricket.

He says, “We don’t play a lot of longer format cricket. It is about the FTP, and not in the players’ hands. We want to play a lot of international cricket, so that our youngsters can understand the environment to improve their skills. Since we play a lot of international leagues, it gives us the opportunity to learn from the best players. We bring that experience to the international team. We share that with the rest of the team.”
The 23 year old spinner was also cautious about not taking his opposition lightly unlike Sri Lankan star Dasun Shanaka who coined Bangladesh to be a “weaker opponent”. Rashid Khan said, “We know our roles and jobs tomorrow. We don’t think about the result, whether we beat them or not. We don’t think opposition is weak or strong. You can’t say that in cricket. It is something that you never handle the result of the game. For us, every opposition is tough. We have to take the opposition seriously, and be well prepared. If we are playing Hong Kong or India tomorrow, we will have the same preparation.”
