Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid decided to play Suryakumar Yadav as an opener in the ongoing T20I series against West Indies. The plan of moving the Indian batter to the opening slot seems to have worked well for the Men in Blue as Yadav scored a fifty in the third T20I against West Indies. The right-handed batter’s innings played a crucial role in helping the Men in Blue register a victory and gain a 2-1 lead in the 5-match series.
The Indian team management has often been seen making changes at the top as they look to shortlist their opening combination for the ICC T20 World Cup. Suryakumar Yadav’s move to open is very similar to what happened with Rohit Sharma. The Indian team captain used to bat in the middle order but was given a play as an opener by MS Dhoni. Since that change during the Champions Trophy in 2013, Rohit has gone on to establish himself as one of the best white ball cricketers for India and a top-level opener in world cricket.
Former India fielding coach R Sridhar spoke about how MS Dhoni wanted to have Rohit Sharma in the playing XI and decided to promote him at the top in order to play him in the team. With Dinesh Karthik’s 146* ensuring him the number four spot, Rohit Sharma opened the innings for India alongside Shikhar Dhawan.
Speaking about it with cricket.com, R Sridhar said, “There was one decision made by Dhoni in 2013 Champions Trophy to send Rohit Sharma to open. Dinesh (Karthik) was batting so well in the practice games but Rohit had to play… so the management then, mostly captain Dhoni, found a spot for Rohit at the top of the order. That was a brilliant move.”

The former Indian team fielding coach also shared how he is happy with the current team managements’ decisions. R Sridhar goes onto add how good it is to see Suryakumar Yadav being included in the T20 squad with Shreyas Iyer replacing Virat Kohli when the 33-year-old is not available for selection.
“A move that we made in T20s was Surya coming into the team a couple of years ago against England. He has shown how good he is. Shreyas (Iyer) is back at No.3, which is where he should be if Virat (Kohli) is not playing,” R Sridhar added.
