Pakistan Names Shaheen Afridi’s Replacement For Asia Cup 2022

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the inclusion of Mohammad Hasnain in the Men in Green team for Asia Cup 2022. The 22-year-old fast bowler will join the squad as a replacement for Shaheen Shah Afridi who has been ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury.

Shaheen Afridi has been a key figure in the Pakistan team set up over the last few years. He spearheads the Men in Green’s bowling unit while being one of the best pacers in the world. However, the left arm bowler has been missing from action since the second second Test match during Pakistan’s’ tour to Sri Lanka. Since then, he has missed the -match ODI series against Netherlands as well.

Following the 2nd game against the Dutch, the PCB announced that the star left-arm pacer will be unavailable for selection for the Asia Cup 2022 due to an injury to his right knee ligament. He is also set to miss out on featuring in the highly anticipated seven-match T20I series against England at home.

Pakistan’s vice-captain Shadab Khan shared his thoughts on Afridi’s absence in the Asia Cup team. He has been was quoted by ESPNcricinfo saying, “We’re hopeful he will be available for future series and the World Cup. We’ll have to play ruthless cricket. Our team culture is such that we never relax against any team.”

The chief medical officer of PCB Dr. Najeebullah Soomro has claimed Afridi to be “brave young man” with the pacer also promising to rejoin the team by bouncing back strongly. “It is now clear he will require more time and is likely to return to competitive cricket in October,” said Soomro.

How will Hasnain fare for Pakistan?

Afridi’s replacement, Hasnain has been in the international circuit for over 3 years since making his debut in March 2019 against Australia. So far, he has appeared in eight ODIs taking 12 wickets and featuring in 18 T20Is while claiming 17 dismissals in the shortest format of the game. The 22-year old’s recent outing came for the Hundred Men’s competition in England where he featured for the Oval Invincibles.

He will be eager to find a slot in the playing XI at the six-nation tournament starting on 27th August. Pakistan’s next assignment sees the Men in Green play the Asia Cup and get back in action during their tournament opener against archrivals India. The Group A fixture is set to be played at the Dubai International stadium on Sunday.
